This is not sustainable.
That's a statement we just heard from one of the region's largest employers.
They were talking about rising and historically high gasoline prices.
This large-scale company bakes and delivers food to area grocery, convenience, mom-and-pop and super stores.
Its business is based on demand, that is, its various baked goods are made on demand -- and demand has remained high. It ships product every day, 24/7.
This company, like most, must consistently re-invest profits to upgrade equipment.
It must also constantly recruit employees in this difficult environment.
We could not afford to allow this business to go out of business -- we'd all suffer by seeing shortages on store shelves.
So, what are "we" doing about it?
We see reports that the $5-plus per gallon of gas has not yet spurred a major pullback in driving (gasoline consumption) in the U.S.
Well, that's just what should happen.
We need to collectively reduce consumption where it makes sense, thereby reducing demand and -- theoretically -- lowering the price.
It's what many of us can do to help ourselves -- and each other.
Don't rely or wait on the government to try to resolve this. Don't rely or wait on the oil and gas industry to try to resolve this.
You'll soon read headlines like this, "Record number of Americans to hit the road for July 4 weekend."
No. Make some sacrifice. Cut back on some driving by consolidating your errands. Shorten your trip, or perhaps carpool.
Do something to help yourself and the rest of us.
