‘Downtown… no finer place for sure’

2 min read

New or refurbished, colorful murals.

New benches and a bike rack.

A solar charging station for phones.

A digital kiosk to connect shoppers and visitors to local businesses.

A new walking surface.

All in an alley off Main Street in downtown Lock Haven that, frankly, has been an eyesore.

Thanks, Lock Haven City Planner Abbey Roberts and city leaders and staff for writing the grant to T-Mobile.

Thanks, Keystone Central School District students in Fred Hoy's drafting and design class for providing key help for this project.

Thanks, T-Mobile for awarding a $50,000 grant to the city kickstart this and reinforcing that public-private partnerships are essential to economic growth.

Thanks, local businesses, for your investments in downtown.

Thanks, Downtown Lock Haven Inc. for such a great job promoting our business district and community.

As Mayor Joel Long said, the initiative will help "transform … a unique entrance to our downtown" from the busy Water Street parking lot/area.

Some may say, "it's only an alley."

No, it's not just an alley. It's part of the living room of our community, as we often refer to downtown.

New streetscape in Lock Haven with beautiful new trees has brought great appeal to downtown.

Repairs to the various intersections to fix stormwater issues is leading to brand new (again) curbing and crosswalk.

And we're waiting the new traffic lights now punctuated by the (rather unsightly) big black boxes. Still, if the new controls will give pedestrians the exclusive right to walk across the street without fear of traffic, that's a good thing.

We'll steal lyrics from Petula Clark's famous song, "Downtown:"

"So go downtown

Things will be great when you're

Downtown

No finer place for sure

Downtown

Everything's waiting for you (downtown, downtown)"

Starting at /week.
