America needs Christmas, and so much more

2 min read

Peace on Earth; Good Will Toward Men.

This is what the angel proclaimed at the birth of Jesus.

In today's antagonistic world -- our world -- America and Americans need to try harder to come together to create more "Peace on Earth" and "Good Will Toward Men."

Too much stress and anger permeate our daily lives.

Our collective national temperature is too high.

Social media too often is used as a public platform and display for aggression and offensive assault on others, simply because of disagreement.

And the national, mainstream media bases its coverage on social media -- people and events that get the most views and clicks. They take a "be-damned-with-the-behavior" attitude on the impact that such awful news has on our us individually and collectively.

More of us need to reject bad behavior and stand up for honesty, integrity, friendship and understanding.

Yes, America needs Christmas.

It is so much more than just a celebration.

It's hope and joy--it's a spirit.

Christmas has historically embodied a spirit of unity in American history.

Over the generations, national leaders as well as millions of everyday Americans have lived up to spreading "good will toward men" during the holiday season.

But it is also a trying time for many, particularly those who have lost close family or friends or are enduring hardship.

And remember, Jesus' birth was fraught with peril, with King Herod in hot pursuit to kill the child and protect his own power.

Even in America, Christmas has not always been a time for carefree celebration.

Wars dampens our spirit.

This year, please try to put all politics aside and celebrate Christmas -- and its true meaning.

Whether it's a gift exchanged, a church service or a meal shared together, our nation needs Christmas, now and every day.
