Good to see people step up to the plate

2 min read

It is heartening to see many people stepping forward to run for public office and serve the citizens of our region.

Serving as an elected representative is kind of thankless these days, what with our divisive politics.

The May 16, 2023 Primary Election in Pennsylvania will see various local offices up for election.

Yes, this year is a big local election year.

At the county level, you'll see races for sheriff, commissioner, auditors, district attorney, prothonotary and register and recorder.

In local courts you'll see races for magisterial district judges.

Area school board seats also are up for grabs.

In municipalities -- townships, boroughs and the city -- there are seats for supervisor, mayor, council, constable and auditor.

Of course, where you lives makes all the difference.

Our townships are governed by a board of three supervisors.

Boroughs are governed by councils and have mayors.

The city has a mayor and council members.

For the record, and this is public information available to you:

r This Tuesday, March 7, is the last day for candidates to circulate and file nomination petitions

r Tuesday, March 8, is the first day to circulate and file nomination papers.

r The date of March 14, is the last day to file objections to nomination petitions.

r Last day for withdrawal by candidates who filed nomination petitions is March 22.

r Another big date is May 1: The last day to register to vote before the May 16 primary.

r And May 9 is the last day to apply for a mail-in or civilian absentee ballot.

Election day, May 16, is the last day for your county Board of Elections to receive voted mail-in and civilian absentee ballots; they must be received by 8 p.m.

On May 16 the polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. prevailing time.

There you have it.

The right to vote is fundamental.

We applaud ALL who run for office.

The election is will be here before we know it.

"Every election is determined by the people who show up."
