Do not, for one second, believe there are not a multitude of great, smart and engaging kids attending our area schools.
Don't let bad news overshadow the more voluminous good news about our kids.
And know that problems in our schools are caused by a small minority of kids.
At The Express, you'll many times read on page A1 about our students' accomplishments.
And there are many.
Here are some very recent examples:
The Keystone Central Career and Technology Center sent 18 students to Hershey to compete in the SkillsUSA state competition in mid-April.
Keystone Central brought home many medals in the following categories: Career Pathway: Engineering, Related Technical Math, Community service, Career Pathway: Human Services, and Technical Drafting. KC students earning accolades include Kayleigh Budinger, Melissa Clymer, Kurt Yap, Chloe Condo, Mallori Etters, Amelia Young, Logan Edmonston, Seth Rauch, Jackson Proctor, Emma Evey, Rachel Hall, Sofia Dressler, Lily Hendricks, Jacob Flook, Glenn Hough, Maille Fowler, Haleigh Peters and Taylor Renninger.
Then we reported that the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School's Tsuga Canadensis team took home top honors in the 37th annual Clinton County Envirothon in mid-April. Students are tested on aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and adapting to a changing climate. The agencies who assisted with the testing were: DCNR Bureau of Forestry Sproul State Forest, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Clinton County Conservation District. Top students are Olivia Clester, Madisyn Garcia, Kyle Stahl, Nolan Bubb and Isaiah Conoway.
Bellefonte Area High School students took top honors in Centre County's 38th annual Envirothon. Taryn Wagner, Allison Berkey, Landon Simpson, Trenton Haagen and Ivan Spigelmyer competed in the same categories and won the competition.
Other stories report students holding events to bring awareness to kids' mental health and peer-pressure struggles.
Many senior projects revolve around helping others.
The list goes on.
Congratulations to all of these and other students doing good things and competing in other ways, their parents and to all of the school instructors performing the critical job of mentoring our kids.
As the saying goes, education is one thing no one can take away from you.
