‘Most pressing problem’ deserves serious attention

2 min read

Things are not great for many people.

Prices at the grocery store are higher -- we can all attest to that.

Rent is also up.

Generally, the cost of living has risen somewhat dramatically in the last few years.

Food.

Rent.

Hygiene.

Medical care.

Transportation.

All of us deserve the opportunity to access these life necessities.

Many of us work to earn them.

But some cannot work.

Some need help.

In a story headlined, "Lock Haven's most pressing problem" in our Thanksgiving Edition last Wednesday, the issue of homelessness and food insecurity was addressed by those on the frontline of the fight.

It talked about the homeless shelters here being constantly full.

It talked about how the food giveaways at the Salvation Army -- based on income but also benevolence -- attract many people.

Addressing homelessness starts with a giving heart.

Real empathy will lead to finding ways to help those who need it.

We applaud the Clinton County Housing Coalition for sheltering the homeless and now also trying to find a way to give more people some help with the proposed Hope Mitchell House.

We applaud the Salvation Army for its giving heart.

We applaud the various churches and organizations here who, for example, provided free Thanksgiving meals over the recent holiday.

A community that cares for those who are less fortunate is a community we should all want to be a part of.
