A few thoughts for Memorial Day

It is no secret that Memorial Day, for many, has become a summer stalwart — a beer and hot dog day for relaxation, get-togethers and, weather willing, pools and hammocks. Many people parse Memorial Day as a day to honor veterans, but fail to necessarily make the connection that it is specifically for our fallen service members. Far from a party day, Memorial Day is supposed to be a somber occasion. And while many may not mind the coexistence of the sales and the parties — or the day off work, if you’re fortunate enough to get it — it is always worth remembering the ...

Kids deserve magic, too

We were struck by the following section of an Associated Press story about how some humans are trying to help amphibians, which ran on page C8 in Thursday’s edition of The Express (if you want to go read the whole thing): “Catching amphibians may just be a nostalgic childhood memory for most, but for John Bateman it never lost its magic. He believes preserving wetlands and vernal pools is critical not only for the amphibians and the environment, but for the next generation to experience the childlike wonder of discovering these hidden creatures. “I think that the future ...

You get the government you (don’t) vote for

We are still waiting for the full picture of what happened in this year’s Primary Election, and likely will be for a few days. This is normal, and expected, in part due to the number of write-in campaigns by people who decided they wanted to run a bit too late into this year’s election cycle to be able to get on the ballot. What is clear, however, is that the turnout was low. Very low. Preliminary data from the unofficial results — certification won’t be for a few weeks — shows a total voter turnout of 23.57% in Clinton County, with 30.24% of the 6,131 registered Democrats ...

Did you know there is an election Tuesday?

Tuesday, May 20 will be the Spring 2025 Primary Election in Pennsylvania. This edition of The Express contains a variety of information about the candidates you may encounter on your ballot — and more articles have been published throughout the days leading up to this point as well, which you can find on our website, www.lockhaven.com. It is common and trite to encourage voters to educate themselves ahead of the election. However, we wanted to take a moment to specifically highlight the importance of educating yourself for this election in particular, as this cycle is featuring an ...

Acceptable losses are unacceptable

We have been watching with some dawning horror as political discourse has increasingly turned towards the concept of acceptable losses. The Democrats, obsessed with trying to understand how they could possibly lose to Trump twice, are edging steadily closer towards throwing away vulnerable minority groups, which will continue to need protecting for as long as we, as a people and a nation, are unwilling to put our actions where our mouths are with regards to equality. Meanwhile, the Republicans are frantically looking to smash whatever they can of the federal bureaucracy while they ...

KCSD needs your attention, involvement

The Keystone Central School Board voted last week, 5-4, to approve its budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year, including a tax increase — its third in as many years. A final adoption is planned for June. We have touched on adjacent topics previously in Our Views, both regarding Keystone specifically and the subject of fiscal responsibility broadly. The district’s finances and the problems therein is one thing. However, we were struck by something else after this most recent meeting: where is everyone? The budget passed with no public comment. None. This is remarkable to us. ...
