JULIA RATER
State College
I write in response to a letter to the editor written by Matthew Stover and published on March 18: To the best of our knowledge, my husband and I do not know Mr. Stover personally.
It's possible that he knows of me through my 27 years of practice in many areas of law, longtime residency in Centre County, raising of three daughters who attended Centre County public school and commitment to our community through decades of service on charitable boards.
I appreciate Mr. Stover's support of me as Centre County Judge, as I am the candidate most experienced and best equipped to render unbiased decisions consistent with the law and facts of every case.
That is the job of a judge.
Being a judge is supposed to be a nonpolitical position. I will hold true to that as a judge, regardless of my personal political affiliation. Further, in case anyone was confused by Mr. Stover's statement that he is comfortable with my "stance on life," please know that I am a Christian.
My father was a Catholic deacon, and he and my mother were Democrats.
Like them, I am pro-choice. And I respect all people who come into our world. We would not have traded my sister with intellectual disabilities for any other type of being.
She taught us about deep compassion and caring, which I will carry forward in her memory forever.
(Julia Cronin Rater, Esq.., is a candidate for Centre County Court of Common Pleas judge.)
