We’ve completely lost our way

Trump’s lawyers continue to argue that the former President, who is charged with trying to overthrow the government, should not be tried for that crime before he again has the chance to become the head of that government he tried to overturn. Trump would thereby be empowered to have all charges against himself dropped and to pardon himself and others for any and all other crimes he and all his accomplices have committed. That possibility becomes more and more likely with each passing day.
The old lawyers’ rule of thumb used to be: “If the law is on your side, argue the law. If the facts are on your side, argue the facts. If neither is on your side, argue.” The new rule of thumb is: “When they have you dead to rights, kick the can down the road til you run out of road, and then keep kicking.” It may be true that “no man is above the law,” but one guy, sure as hell, is always one step ahead of it.
