One reason we study history is to understand how past decisions impact the world today. Leading up to WWII, one mistake we remember involved appeasement, a diplomatic strategy that involved making concessions to an aggressive foreign power to avoid war. At that time, Neville Chamberlain, prime minister of Britain, agreed to allow Hitler's Germany to occupy the Sudetenland, a German-speaking region of Czechoslovakia, in exchange for Hitler promising not to make any more territorial demands in Europe. But we know the policy of appeasement further emboldened Hitler, resulting in war.
Chamberlain's claim of "peace in our time" is reflected in the rhetoric of Trump's declaration, "I will keep us out of war." He weakens our country by sowing doubt in our election system. He promises to punish those who don't agree with him. He says he'll blame Jews if he loses.
We know from his first presidency that Trump will weaken NATO, appease Putin and embolden dictators in China and North Korea.
Many patriotic Republicans are deserting Trump, putting country before party. These former Trump supporters can no longer overlook his lies and insults. They cannot defend what happened on Jan. 6. They cannot abide Trump's dangerous demonization of immigrants.
Trump's support of Putin, a threat to world peace, has compelled lifelong Republicans to say enough is enough! REAL Republicans have bravely put country and patriotism before a party they no longer recognize.
Trump's deference to Putin's tyranny will make us less safe. Let history be our guide.
