As the election nears, let's focus on the biggest issues, such as what type of nation we aspire to be. The economy is a tricky issue, in that Trump inherited Obama's strong economy, and Biden inherited Trump's contracted economy because of his botched COVID response.

Trump's recent trial (resulting in multiple felony convictions) revealed a depth of sleaze greater than one might otherwise have expected, by way of his associates' past behaviors.

Add to that his recommendation for Paul Manafort to run the Republican convention. Remember Manafort? (I didn't either.) He was Trump's 2016 campaign manager. Later, he was convicted of 37 felonies, including bank fraud, income tax evasion, Moscow-based international business violations, etc. He was pardoned by you-know-who.

Apparently, sleazy people, like birds of a feather, tend to mutually associate, resulting in even greater sleaze.

If you were raised in a family with dedicated political party affiliations and you dearly wish to remain loyal, now may be the time to reconsider. Political parties have changed so radically that your forebears may well have changed their allegiances.

I'm sure that my parents, loyal Republicans that they were, would not have remained loyal to a party so removed from its roots, so divisive and morally depraved as we are witnessing under this new Party of Donald Trump.

They were better people. They would have asked how such a party could ever possibly "Make America Great Again."

Starting at /week.
