During the 15-plus years in the classroom teaching American Government, I used to pride myself on students stopping me at the end of the course to ask, "Are you a Republican or Democrat? We can't tell."
I was registered as an independent, so committed was I to being fair to all my students, regardless of their partisan affiliation or affinity. Thoughtful, fact-based criticism of both parties' platforms and policies was my job, as I saw it. My students were encouraged to take off their partisan glasses and to look as clearly as possible at the short term and long term consequences of proposed policies and campaign rhetoric.
Today my message is "Vote for Democrats, up and down the ballot." Many members of the Republican party have yet to be frank or serious about the distortion of American principles and institutions that their candidates are endorsing. Vote for Democrats at least until the GOP regains its legitimacy.
