Help the homeless

Kimberly Bower

Lock Haven

Lock Haven is a charming small town filled with wonderful people. While I’m not originally from here, I’ve had the privilege of living in this beautiful community for over 30 years. The stunning rolling mountains, winding rivers and untouched wilderness create a picturesque backdrop. However, I recently became aware of an issue that I never expected to find in our quaint town: homelessness.

You may not see it, but it exists in our little corner of the world. Imagine having to find a place to sleep on the street or on the steps of a store, seeking solace from hunger, cold and loneliness. It could happen to any of us, a lost paycheck, a significant illness, unpaid medical bills, a divorce, addiction, a poor choice or the death of a loved one leading to overwhelming costs. Those who are homeless here need our compassion and support; they are people like anyone else who require vital assistance. This is a complex challenge that encompasses financial, mental health and spiritual needs.

So, the question now before us is, can we help? Can you reach out to someone who is struggling to survive another day? We must confront this issue with courage and resolve, rather than turn away in fear. Our small city requires more resources–additional shelters, expanded outreach efforts, more means to provide aid. This isn’t merely about saving a soul; it’s about preserving lives from destruction.

As we enter this Christmas season, let us reflect on the true meaning of our celebrations. Jesus Christ was born into this world, sacrificing His own life for humanity because of His profound love for us all. Can we emulate His example and offer our help to those in dire need–especially the homeless? They have virtually nothing. Are we willing to provide assistance and hope? Are we prepared to make sacrifices as Jesus did for us?

We are a caring community in Lock Haven. Let’s do everything we can to save a life, for in doing so, we will be blessed. Remember, for whatever we do for the least among us, we do for Him. Let’s express our gratitude for our own blessings by extending our generosity to those less fortunate.

**Matthew 25:40-45 says;

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,

43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.

So, how can I help, what can I do you might ask…

Well here are a few suggestions should you choose to.

1-Volunteer at the local shelters.

2-Donate to local charities, like food, clothing, monetary donations, take time to listen and show love and compassion.

3-Be a good listener, learn their names.

4-Give a “Blessings Bag”, these are filled with necessities like hand sanitizer, socks, winter hats/gloves, winter coats, toothbrushes/toothpaste etc.

5-Help them get into a shelter or safe place.

6-Love Bigger and show them Gods Love.

Bottom line: Whatever way you can help, going above and beyond will have immeasurable blessings because our Heavenly Father will see your heart of gratitude. If you see one in need, don’t pass them by, but carefully and gently approach them with kindness and respect. Be mindful of your surroundings and always minister in public places.
