Stoop diplomacy

Carol Eberhard

Lock Haven

Stoop: a small raised platform, typically accessed by a few steps, leading to the entrance of a house or building. This can also be called a porch. People have them, but no one is out there, many times there aren’t even chairs on them.

We live in troubled times. Even a “hello” is considered a threat and often met with a silent stare.

The small niceties of social interaction have been lost in the digital ear bud world. I get it. I am guilty. It is all too easy to go to my secluded back yard and avoid everyone.

I encourage you to “touch grass” as the internet says, and come out and enjoy your stoop. Spring is a great time to practice a little stoop diplomacy. Enjoy this rare time of year when it is neither too hot nor too cold in PA. Then try a wave, a nod, or even a “hello” to people as they pass. If you are walking, try to reciprocate. I know it can be scary, but it is a small step to a connection with other humanoids on this planet.

Turn off the screen, and try it. I know we are all tired and burnt out, and there aren’t enough minutes in a day. But, the little investment in relaxing on a porch where you are accessible, may actually improve your world.

Let’s start with the small stuff and practice.

Warning: This can lead you discover who actually lives on your block, or heavens forbid, a conversation!

Starting at $3.69/week.
