This year May 11-17 is National Police Week with Thursday, May 15, being Police Memorial Day. In the law enforcement community this week is a time for reflection, remembrance and gratitude, serving as a solemn reminder of the courage and dedication of our fallen officers.
In 2024 there were 147 federal, state, county, municipal, military, tribal and campus officers who died in the line of duty. As of the beginning of May there have been 25 line of duty deaths so far in 2025.
I would ask that everyone take a moment to remember these fallen officers as well as the officers, troopers, deputies, constables and other law enforcement personnel who are out there every day making our communities a safer place.
We honor these heroes, and their families, who have made the ultimate sacrifice today and every day.
To those who continue to serve, I thank you for your unwavering service and commitment. And, in the words of Sergeant Estherhaus from the old Hill Street Blues TV show, "Let's Be Careful Out There."
