Over 20 years ago, I ran by signed petition and was elected to the national American Chemical Society (ACS) Board of Directors, in 2005-7.
Now, in six months, STEM has been trashed and medicine is not far behind. The 'big beautiful bill' won't help.
I am now running a last-minute petition campaign to become one of the 15 members of the American Chemical Society Board of Directors.
They are the largest scientific society in the world, having around $2 billion in assets and an annual budget exceeding over $700,000,000.
I have been a member for over 60 years, and I believe that at the top of ACS, it is now heading in the wrong direction.
What can I do, as one voice against a $2 billion not for profit corporation?
Some of you know my vocal concerns about national ACS were made about the ACS support of ISEF 2025 in Columbus, Ohio -- site of ACS's main profit-making publishing center. I got nowhere.
ACS committed $25,000 for student awards -- split four ways. Do you know what a good STEM education costs now?
ISEF 2025 is the world's largest STEM High School Science Fair.
At ISEF 2025 -- 2000 students worldwide vying for $9 million in awards --there was no ACS info booth, no sponsorship, no receptions, no mixers, no pins…nothing.
I wish I had better news to report.
Now, I need 20 ACS members to sign each day for the next 10 days to qualify by the July 15 deadline for the October election.
