I am no great admirer of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. His candidacy for New York mayor raised valid concerns: limited experience, economically dubious proposals -- rent freezes, free bus rides, city-owned grocery stores -- and a polarizing democratic socialist platform that often-alienated moderates. These are legitimate grounds for skepticism.
But the right of center arguments against his candidacy have been almost uniformly less critique than reckless distortion. Right of center commentary has leaned on exaggeration and rhetorical flourish rather than fact. By conflating ideology with reality, right-wing media undermines its own credibility and contributes little to serious debate about the city's future.
The most glaring misstep is the insistence on branding Mamdani a Communist. This is inflammatory and false. Mamdani is a democratic socialist, a distinction that matters. Mamdani ran on "reforms" within capitalism and democracy, not on the defining tenets of Communism: the overthrow of democratic government, the abolition of private property and a one-party state. To define democratic socialism into Marxist-Leninism erases the crucial difference between misguided reform and revolution.
The right's rhetoric grows more absurd when it warns that "the hammer and sickle will fly over City Hall" under Mamdani's leadership. Equally outlandish is the typical swipe at Mamdani's father, a respected Columbia professor of African studies, who is usually caricatured as wearing "a communist lens so thick it requires a prescription." These are not arguments but caricatures, designed to inflame rather than inform.
There were real reasons to oppose Mamdani's rise. His inexperience, ambitious but economically questionable proposals and ideological rigidity are all fair grounds for critique. But none of these serve as the main line of argument in conservative commentary about him. Instead, conservatives offer a reckless case built on exaggeration, mischaracterization and bombast. Like Donald Trump, Fox News and MAGA defenders, Republicans resort to the refuge for those with really nothing to say: name-calling. They repeatedly label Democrats like Franklin D. Roosevelt, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris as "Communists" or Marxists." Because they trade reason for ridicule, their claims are politically charged rhetoric rather than accurate descriptions of Democratic politicians and policies. Throwing slurs doesn't prove a point -- it proves you don't have one. Mamdani has lots of problems. Being a Communist isn't one of them.
