We are writing as veterans and members of the Clinton County community regarding recent advertisements featuring Terry Banfill. We believe certain statements concerning his military service should be reviewed and verified before being presented as fact.
Those of us who have served understand the importance of accurately representing military service, assignments, qualifications and awards. Military service carries significant meaning, and many veterans feel strongly that public accounts of such service should be held to the highest standard of accuracy.
When questions arise concerning an individual's military record, we believe newspapers have a responsibility to thoroughly verify the information provided before publication. If information previously published is found to be inaccurate, we encourage the newspaper to issue appropriate corrections or clarifications.
Our concern is not political or personal. It is rooted in respect for those who served honorably and in a desire to preserve the integrity of military service. Veterans have earned the right to expect that claims regarding military service presented to the public are accurate and supported by the facts.
We respectfully ask the Lock Haven Express to carefully review any future articles/advertisements concerning military service and ensure that all claims are properly verified before publication.
