Border vs. air travel

Rob Harley Mill Hall In a recent letter to the editor, Mr. Fred Bucheit makes the argument that focusing on illegal immigrants coming across the southern border is propaganda because more people get sick via air travel. While I agree that lots of people who travel on public transport probably should be doing so when they are sick, I would mention to Mr. Bucheit to keep in mind that two things can be true at once. Let’s remember that no matter whether the person sneaking across the border is a gang member or not doesn’t negate the fact that doing so is a violation of law and makes ...

Calm before the storm

Sam Stea Cogan Station I don’t know about you, but since the election of DJT, I feel an eerie calmness in the air, a kind of placidity. It’s there in public places, grocery stores, gas stations. Folks are acting more polite to each other too. I guess it could be a good sign, that folks feel our Sacred Republic rests in safe hands. I’m not sure what to think or feel. God, I just wish we weren’t so smitten by one mightily flawed individual. History has shown us that democracies and republics are fragile things, giving way to autocrats at the drop of a hat and always with ...

My America

Nancy KUHNS Mill Hall As a child I was taught to love, honor and cherish this country. It was a country where we worked out our differences. A country where there was not so much hatred as today. A country where I had the privacy between my doctor and myself to decide what was right for my body. A country where we looked after one another. A country where we did not think any job was too menial, like field work, janitorial, etc. Now businesses are still looking to hire because no one wants to work, no matter what level the job is. I was taught to honor vets and to remember those ...

Democrats have no idea why they lost

Kimball Shinkoskey Woods Cross Democrats have been busy self-diagnosing themselves as to what went wrong in the 2024 election. They have aimed their recriminations at reasonable sounding stuff like Biden didn’t get out of the race soon enough; Harris was too progressive; Harris wasn’t progressive enough; there was too little focus on economy-related Democrat achievements like the infrastructure legislation; there was too much focus on a single issue like abortion. All those things likely mattered some, but not nearly as much as idealistic “Kamelot” Democrats think. There are ...

Jersey Shore Elementary — Here we come

Lillie Langlois Cummings Township At the Jersey Shore Area School Board meeting on Monday, Nov. 11, the board voted 6 to 3 to close Salladasburg Elementary School. Very few details have been given this year as to how this will happen, but we know it will take effect in the next school year 2025-2026. Superintendent Dr. Brian Ulmer stated that all ~215 Salladasburg students will be moved to Jersey Shore Elementary School, which currently has around 490 students. JSASD is highly dysfunctional. Just last year (April 2023), the previous school board voted to keep Salladasburg open and ...

Airlines a greater source of disease risk than the border

Fred Bucheit Howard In Thursday’s paper, columnist Betsy McCaughey wasted more than a dozen good paragraphs ranting about diseases coming across our southern border. Betsy, do you ever bother to read anything real? Approximately 2.9 million passengers land at airports from overseas every day, based on figures from the FAA which state that around 2.9 million airline passengers are screened daily across the US airspace (and by the way, that is how the 9/11 nutcases got here). Those 2.9 million airline passengers are very likely to be carrying everything from Ebola to monkeypox and ...
