Roger Herman Bellefonte As the election nears, let’s focus on the biggest issues, such as what type of nation we aspire to be. The economy is a tricky issue, in that Trump inherited Obama’s strong economy, and Biden inherited Trump’s contracted economy because of his botched COVID response. Trump’s recent trial (resulting in multiple felony convictions) revealed a depth of sleaze greater than one might otherwise have expected, by way of his associates’ past behaviors. There was no greater single act of betrayal to our Nation, the Oath of Office of the presidency and our collective values than the attack on our nation’s capital on Jan. 6, 2021. Better off today than you were four years ago?

Tim Mannello Williamsport Not a day goes by that Republicans don’t ask the question: “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” Without explanation or evidence, they invariably answer their own question by saying: “Of course not.” Asking “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” is ambiguous. What does “better off” mean? Financially? Emotionally? Educationally? Physically? Relationally? Environmentally? “Whateverly?” And who is the “you” they are asking? All Americans? Some Americans? Harry Gural Lewisburg Even Donald Trump’s most diehard supporters must admit that he’s not the man he was in 2016. At 78 years old, he now rambles incoherently, loses his train of thought and forgets the most basic facts. Trump refers to his zigzag speaking style as “the weave,” as if he does complex mental gymnastics and miraculously lands on his feet. But many of his comments are bizarre. Thompson is anti-science

Mary Bruce State College Who is Republican Congressman Glenn Thompson trying to kid? In a recent campaign mailing Thompson says he’s “Standing up for Science.” That’s ridiculous. For more than 120 years, scientists have known that burning fossil fuels, and adding the resulting CO2 to the atmosphere, would lead to warming. The Swedish scientist who first discovered this went on to win a Nobel Prize.
