Student-Athlete in the Spotlight: Laurel Moyer
Laurel Moyer is a Central Mountain High School graduate and current freshman runner on the Lock Haven University Women's Cross-Country team. This past weekend, Laurel placed 18th out of 172 runners at the PSAC Championships at California University of PA. That finish was good enough to help the Lady Bald Eagles to an 8th place overall finish and earn Laurel all-conference honors. Laurel says of her love of running, "I love being able to test my limits of challenging myself. I also like running as a team because we know how mentally painful it can be so we push ourselves together and grow together." Laurel finds it a special feeling to be able to compete at the collegiate level in her hometown. She says, "I think it would be special to compete in collegiate sports anywhere. But I do love running at home because this is a beautiful area with great running trails. Also, more of my family members are able to come to my meets for support." Laurel had a great amount of success at the high school level while at Central Mountain and is already making a name for herself in just her freshman year at Lock Haven. She has this advice for youngsters looking to compete as a runner: "Put in the work, don't slack off, and pay attention to the little things like stretching or small strengthening exercises. All of this combined can help prevent injury and you will get a lot farther in your running career. And remember to enjoy it, college running does not last forever." As for her personal goals moving forward, Laurel admits that is a tough thing for her to think about. She says that she's had both good and bad days but simply wants to continue to work to "shed time off" races. Laurel Moyer is sure to be a name that the LHU and Clinton County communities are likely to hear much more of in the years ahead.
