Local roundup: LHU softball coach earns 300th career win

On a historic day for coach Kelly Shannon, Lock Haven picked up a doubleheader sweep over Mansfield University, 9-1 and 10-2, in the PSAC Eastern Division opener for both teams. For Shannon, the wins marked the 300th and 301st in her illustrious career as she sits second all-time at Lock Haven. All of her wins have come at LHU since her first year in 2010.

Sydney Arrigale had a huge performance in game one, going 2 for 3 with a double and home run. Riley McClellan was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

In the second game, graduate Maddy Jean started for Mansfield and hit a home run while Alexis Easling had a double. Rianna Trexler was 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs.

• Despite owning leads in both games, the Lock Haven baseball team dropped a PSAC East Division doubleheader to visiting Shippensburg, 6-1 and 9-5. In the first game, the Bald Eagles were held to just three singles, one apiece by Blaise Zeiders, Zach Kaatz and Nick White.

Gavin Troutman had the only extra-base hit between the two games for the Bald Eagles with a double as he went 2 for 4 in the second contest. Garrett Nepert went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored as well.

• The Lock Haven University women’s lacrosse team capped a four-game homestand this afternoon by hosting Slippery Rock in PSAC Western Division action and the Bald Eagles picked up an all-important victory, downing the visitors, 19-14. Lock Haven benefitted from a total team effort that saw a number of individuals stand out on both sides of the ball.

Lock Haven goalkeeper Lauren Girardi made 14 saves and a six-goal effort from Krysta Reading was only part of her tremendous performance.

• Lock Haven opened the season with a road loss to Shepherd, 5-2, in what was the PSAC opener for LHU.

In the singles, Maddy Reeves, a Montoursville graduate, and Joaquina Orlandini both earned victories for Lock Haven. Reeves defeated Isabella Mascari in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4.

• A number of tremendous individual efforts paved the way for Lock Haven at Millersville University’s Millersville Metrics meet in women’s track and field. Hurdler Billie Jo Bollinger and sprinter Riyana Owens posted victories to highlight their efforts and thrower Megan Manglaviti turned in another big day.

Bollinger ran to victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:04.21 and she finished second in the 100-meter hurdles finals with a time of 14.92. She ran 14.98 in the prelims. Both times in the 100 hurdles event marked PSAC marks and her time of 14.92 in the finals – a personal-best – is the fourth-fastest time in school history. Bollinger’s effort of 1:04.21 in the 400 hurdles is an all-time top-five LHU performance.

• Competing at William & Mary’s Colonial Relays, Lock Haven’s men’s track and field team racked up a number of impressive efforts.

It was Tanner Walter, a Milton graduate, John Davern, Ryan Miller, Andrew Wehrle and Kirk Stewart who led the way. Walter finished 24th out of 45 finishers at 5,000 meters with a PSAC time of 15:32.78.

Davern was 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a PSAC mark of 9:34.23.

In the championship 400-meter race, Miller ran 48.80. The PSAC mark helped him finish fifth overall and he was top Division II finisher in a DI dominated field.
