Central Mountain loses a close road game to Clearfield 21-6
CLEARFIELD — Central Mountain came close to earning its first win of the year, but fell by 15 points at Clearfield in a close, tight game, 21-6, on Friday night.
The Wildcats (0-9) trailed just 7-6 in the second quarter after Rocco Serafini had a 12-yard touchdown run. It came just 25 seconds after Clearfield (7-2) scored on a 36-yard interception return by Will Domico with 7:44 to play in the quarter.
The two teams prevented each other from scoring the rest of the quarter as Clearfield took a narrow 7-6 lead into the half. The Bison and Wildcats battled in the third, before Clearfield scored on a 26-yard Brady Collins run with 52 seconds to play in the third quarter. The score put the Bison up, 14-6.
Clearfield’s final score came early in the fourth quarter on a 29-yard run by Collins with 9:03 to play. The Bison playd well defensively the rest of the game, however, preventing Central Mountain from scoring and rallying for a road win.
Brady Myers and Serafini led Central Mountain’s ground game as Myers ran for 47 yards on 12 carries and Serafini ran for 40 on 12 attempts. Myers also led the Wildcats’ passing game, going 6 of 9 for 73 yards. Thomas Sprague saw time as well as he went 3 of 8 for 31 yards. Xavier Persun was Central Mountain’s top receiver, as he caught three balls for 56 yards and Kevin Grenninger had three receptions for 36 yards. Domiinc Longworth caught two passes for 15 yards as well.
Central Mountain’s defense did a solid job forcing Clearfield to run the ball. The Bison had just 28 passing yards.
Clearfield held a 259-191 edge in total yards and prevented Central Mountain from eclipsing 100 on the ground (29 for 86). Collins gave Central Mountain’s defense some problems as he ran for 146 yards on just 17 carries.
Friday’s close game was the second-closest contest this year for the Wildcats, the other being a tough 14-7 loss in Week 1 to Mifflin County. Central Mountain ends the regular season at home in Mill Hall against Class AAAA state-ranked Jersey Shore on Friday.
