The fourth-seeded Bucktail girls gave top-seeded Meadowbrook all they had in the District 4 Class A semifinals at Loyalsock, but a heartbreaking shot from Kailey Devlin with a minute left broke a tied game and gave Meadowbrook a 32-29 victory.
Devlin finished with a game high 22 points in
Junior Matti Mason, who also serves at the team’s emotional leader, picked up her fourth foul late in the second quarter. Just prior to picking up her fourth foul Mason put the Bucks up for the first time 16-14 with 58 seconds remaining in the first half.
Following Mason’s fourth foul that put her on the bench, Devlin hit a 3 to give her team a 17-16 lead at the half.
Mason would add another quick layup in the first minute of the third quarter giving her team the lead back, but an offensive charge on the next possession sent her to the bench for the remainder of the game. Despite missing just about the entire second half, Mason led her team with 10 points.
Again, Devlin played heartbreaker as following the Mason charge, she promptly gave her team a 22-19 lead with a trey.
Late in the fourth quarter, Lola English gave Bucktail the lead for the final time at 29-28 with under two minutes. On the following Bucktail possession their second leading scorer Mak Wagner would also be called for her fifth foul on a charging call, ending her night.
For the third time after a big Bucktail foul, Devlin followed the script with another trey, putting her team up for good at 31-29. A Maddy Fasnacht free throw set the 32-29 Meadowbrook win.
“I am proud of the girls and as always they play with all heart” said Bucktail coach Sue Ellen Wagner. “We just came up a little short, now we have to reset and love on, we still have another game to play.”
