CM Week in Review: Results were a mixed bag for the Wildcats last week

The results were a mixed bag for the CM teams last week. The golf, girls tennis and cross country teams each recorded a win and a loss while the volleyball team won its only contest while football and girls soccer dropped their only games.

For boys soccer, it was a loss and a tie.

The girls tennis team hosted two matches and went 1-1 for the week. Last Tuesday, CM fell to Danville by a score of 4-1 and then on Thursday rebounded to defeat Williamsport, 3-2. The lone winner for CM on Tuesday was Addison Lindsay, who continues to dominate her opponents. Against Williamsport, the Wildcats got victories from Lindsay and Ellie Harry in singles along with the doubles pairing of freshmen Kassie Williams and Leah Wian.

The win by Williams and Wian was the first of their young careers. Coach Tom Zettle was very complimentary of their performance.

“I liked how they did not let any mistakes bother them,” Zettle said, adding they are “two very coachable young ladies who really work hard at practice.”

Zettle is excited about the future of Wildcats’ girls tennis team.

The golf team was on the road twice last week traveling to Selinsgrove on Tuesday where they were defeated, 166-175, at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club. Top scorer for CM in that match was Reese Walizer (41). She was followed closely behind by teammates Zach St. Clair (42) and Stevan Fisher (44) in the nine-hole match.

On Thursday, the Wildcats traveled to Benton for an 18-hole match and dominated their hosts to the tune of 306-422. Fisher was the match medalist as he shot a 73. With the postseason just about three weeks away, coach John Lodek is zeroing in with his athletes on their mental focus. His team will need that focus as early as today as they face a major challenge in taking on Jersey Shore.

Girls volleyball was victorious in its only action as it traveled to Berwick to take on a traditionally solid program. The Wildcats took the match, 3-0. To earn the win, CM needed to display focus and grit as each set was very competitive.

As would be expected after a solid win, coach Chipp McCann was pleased with his squad and commented that he was “proud of the girls. We overcame some adversity in not having one of our regular players due to an injury. We had to change the lineup a little bit but we did what we needed to do to come away with a W against a quality opponent.”

The football team fell to 0-3 on the season as they fell to visiting Williamsport, 36-17. An encouraging sign for the Wildcats is that they were able to get the offense going a bit in the second half and create a few chunk plays. That is an element of the offense that had been missing through the first two and a half games of the season.

What had been hurting the Wildcats defensively in their first two contests of the season was their inability to stop the pass. However, Williamsport was seemingly more adept at running than passing and their ground game was able to wear down the young Wildcat Squad to secure the win. Despite their third straight loss to open the season, the Wildcats continued to play hard and physical throughout the contest and showed some signs of good possibilities moving ahead into week four as they travel to take on Selinsgrove who will be looking to regroup after being drummed by Jersey Shore.

The CM girls soccer team finally opened their season on Tuesday as they traveled to Altoona to take on the Mountain Lions. Simple put, it was a rough opener for the very young Wildcats as they were defeated soundly, 9-0.

Hoping to recover from the opening night loss, they took on a traditionally solid Lewisburg team on Saturday. Unfortunately the result was once again not one that was favorable to coach Ryan Veltri’s team as they fell, 11-0.

Veltri does not have much time to make adjustments with his squad as they return to action tonight as they open their home schedule by hosting Danville. Veltri commented on the adjustment his team must make.

“Moving forward for Monday’s game, we will need to look at our defensive tactics and start to really improve in stopping teams getting into our defensive third easily and allowing them opportunities to shoot,” Veltri said. “We have had the tendency to fall apart right after we give away the first goal.”

For the CM boys soccer team it was a rough night at Altoona as well on Tuesday as they suffered a 4-0 loss. On Saturday, coach Billy Hook’s team headed west on I-80 to take on Dubois. Again the Wildcats had difficulty generating much on the offensive end as they played the host team to a 0-0 tie. On a high note, Hook feels that his team’s defense has been pretty solid.

“Our defense and goalkeeping is shaping up nicely. Now we need to find some consistency in the attack,” Hook noted.

They will have an opportunity to do just that as early as today as they travel to South Williamsport before back-to-back home games on Tuesday and Thursday against Selinsgrove and Williamsport, respectively.

The CM cross country team was in action just once last week as they competed in a tri-meet against Loyalsock and Danville. Grace Keohane was the top finisher for the Wildcats coming in 4th while teammate Gariella Hosley finished 12th. On the boys side it was Damien Winner with a second-place finish while Sam Wible came in sixth. Both teams were defeated by Danville and picked up victories against Loyalsock.

The runners are back in action this week on Tuesday as they travel to Midd-West for a meet with the home team, Lewisburg and Montoursville.

LOOKING AHEAD

A victory by the Wildcat golf team today could create a three-way tie for the top spot in the PHAC. Girls volleyball hosts defending PIAA champion Bald Eagle Area on Monday night in a contest that will be a big measuring stick for the Wildcats.

Boys soccer will have an opportunity to make an early statement or two in the PHAC as they host Selinsgrove and Williamsport this week.

Girls soccer has multiple home games this week.

Girls tennis has three matches this week including hosting rival Jersey Shore at the Gibson Courts on Thursday.

CAT SCRATCHINGS

Not often do you see a high school football game with four field goals, yet that is exactly what occurred on Friday as Williamsport converted three and CM one in the game. The successful CM kick coming off the foot of Micah Carson.
