Franklin’s contract is adjusted
STATE COLLEGE — Penn State’s Board of Trustees on Friday approved an amendment to James Franklin’s contract.
The Committee on Equity and Human Resources made the revision to account for the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, which the No. 4 Nittany Lions (10-1) are expected to make this year.
Penn State did not release new details of the incentives for the contract that Franklin signed in 2021 through 2031.
“The Committee on Equity and Human Resources voted unanimously to revise the performance incentives section in Coach James Franklin’s contract,” a Penn State spokesperson said in a statement. “The change accounts for the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format, which beginning this year includes one additional game compared to the previous four-team single elimination CFP format from 2014-2023.”
Mark Wogenrich of SI.com first reported the story.
Frankin’s contract is worth $85 million and included up to $1 million additional annually in performances incentives.
Among those previous incentives: $800,000 for winning the CFP championship game, $500,000 for reaching the title game, $400,000 for reaching the 4-team College Football Playoff, $350,000 for winning the Big Ten title game, $300,000 for reaching a New Year’s Six bowl and $200,000 for reaching another bowl game.
The Lions could also potentially reach this year’s Big Ten championship game, if they beat Maryland today and Michigan wins at Ohio State.
Otherwise, Ohio State will play Oregon for the Big Ten title.
In the College Football Playoff, Penn State could play as many as four postseason games, including the national championship game scheduled for Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
The Lions are in position to host a first-round CFP game on either Friday, Dec. 20 or Saturday, Dec. 21. The CFP quarterfinals are at bowl sites on Dec. 31-Jan. 1 with the semifinals scheduled for Jan. 9-10.
Franklin, 52, is in his 11th season at Penn State and has a record of 98-40.
