Bellefonte wins thriller against Philipsburg-Osceola in baseball in 10 innings

BELLEFONTE — It was an extra inning Laurel Highlands thriller Monday at James Montgomery Ward Field. With one swing of the bat, Bellefonte’s Cam Lucas ended a 10-innings thriller that saw Bellefonte take home a 5-4 victory against Philipsburg-Osceola.

After a solid victory Friday against State College Friday night, the Bellefonte baseball team opened up its week with an even tougher challenge hosting the Philipsburg-Osceola team that came into the contest with an impressive 9-2 record on the season.

This one would come down to a thrilling ending as both teams went into the seventh tied at three. It would end on a Cam Lucas walk off RBI single in the 10th.

Bellefonte started Zach Lehman on the mound against Mounties’ hurler Archer Baughman. Lehman got the no decision as he was replaced in the sixth by Peyton Vancas, who stayed the course and picked up the victory.

Picking up the loss for Philipsburg-Osceola was Zach Yoder.

The Red Raiders led going into the sixth but the Mounties tied things in the inning. Nick DeSimone led off the inning with single. He reached second via a Bellefonte wild pitch and was singled in by a Zach Wagner single back up the middle, tying it at three.

Going into the bottom of the eighth, the Red Raiders threatened and was one hit away from ending the contest. Evan Mattern led off with a single. He moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Oliver Thornburg. Lehman singled but Mattern was held at third. He would be stranded as the game headed into the ninth.

That would be all the Mounties were able to post, sending it to the bottom of the inning knotted at three.

In the eighth, the Mounties took the lead momentarily when Archer Baughman scored to take a 4-3 advantage. But Bellefonte dug down deep and rallied to score the tying run after a Braeden Fortney double. He later scored on an RBI fielders choice by Vancas.

The Bellefonte defense held in the ninth and 10th inning and put the game on ice in their part of the 10th.

Catcher Oliver Thornburg hit a comebacker up the middle to start things off. Lehman followed with a walk setting the stage for Lucas. Lucas ended things on an RBI single to opposite field, cementing the Bellefonte victory.

“I’m really, really proud of the guys tonight. It’s been an up and down year in some ways. We shave been inconsistent at times,” said Bellefonte coach Joni Clark. “We started hitting the ball a little today and it got contagious. The guys battled back multiple times in this game. I said to Cam ( Lucas) he’s always ready when we need him. He knows his job and he plays a crucial role for us.”

Philipsburg-Osceola opened the scoring in the first inning. With one out, Baughman walked and moved to second on a balk. He was replaced on the base paths by Jake Lucas.

He scored from second on an opposite hit by teammate Fischer White, making it a 1-0 advantage for the Mounties. Back came the Red Raiders in the bottom of the first. With one out, Parker Capperelle blasted a double that sailed over third baseman’s head.

Evan Mattern brought him home as he hit a one-hopper off the fence for the RBI double to center, tying it at one.

The rally continued as Oliver Thornburg was hit by a Baughman offering. He was replaced by courtesy runner Jacks McHail.

Cam Lucas brought in a running Mattern as he went to opposite field for the RBI single, putting Bellefonte with runners on second and third after a steal by Lucas. Designated hitter Quentin Crothomel walked, loading the bases.

Braeden Fortney walked giving him an RBI walk and his team a 3-1 lead. In the inning, the Red Raiders brought all nine in the line up to the plate. Philipsburg-Osceola went right back at it offensively in the second.

Zach Yoder opened things reaching on an error after hitting it to short. He moved up to second on a wild pitch. Connor Guenot singled Yoder to third, hitting a hit into shallow right field.

Nick DeSimone hit a chopper to score Yoder on an RBI fielders choice, cutting it to a 1-run Bellefonte lead. But the Red Raiders defense held, keeping the lead going into their at bats at the in the bottom of the inning. Baughman sent the side down in order, sending the game into the third inning at 3-2.

Lehman looked strong on the mound in the third, striking out two of the three outs. Lehman tried to help his own cause in the third, doubling to left field. But the Mounties settled in a he was left stranded at second.

The Mounties offense was relentless, getting runners in scoring position again in the fourth.

Yoder and Guenot both singled to start things off.

DeSimone put down a sacrifice bunt, moving runners to scoring position. But a Zach Wayne comebacker to the pitcher, pegged out Yoder at home. With two outs, the Mounties found themselves with the bases loaded.

Pitching cool under pressure, Lehman ended the potential rally with a clutch strike out. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, adding to the drama that would head into the final innings.

Bellefonte is back in action Wednesday as they travel to Hollidaysburg.
