Shore baseball falls to Mounties in pitcher’s duel

On Wednesday afternoon, the South Williamsport Mountaineers took on the Jersey Shore Bulldogs in a head-to-head baseball matchup. South Williamsport would come out on top with a 2-0 win over Jersey Shore.

The game started in a pitcher’s duel, with Cole Gerber on the mound for South Williamsport and Greyson Confair on for Jersey Shore.

“I thought that he did well. I think that he was struggling a bit in the beginning to locate things, but then he settled in nice. We needed a long outing from him, and he gave us what he needed.” commented Jersey Shore head coach Joe Dunn on his starting pitcher.

“He did amazing. I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s a freshman but out there, he has a demeanor of a senior. When he comes out, we know that we are going to get 100% from him, we knew we needed to get this one and we knew that Cole was our guy.” South Williamsport head coach Chase Waller commented on his starting pitcher.

It was a scoreless first inning until Levi Butler for South came up to bat with two outs and two runners on base.

“Pretty much just tried to get the ball in play. I just couldn’t strike out with those guys on base,” Butler stated.

Butler was able to hit a line-drive single into right field that scored Cole Gerber, who reached base on a walk, and Marc Molina, who reached after getting hit by a pitch. Those were the only runs in the game as the defense for both teams was solid.

In the fourth inning, it looked like South was going to add on to its lead, the bases were loaded with two outs and Shore decided to make a pitching change and bring in Zach Myers. Shore was able to get out of the inning with the help of Myers as Trace Wertz hit a line drive that was caught by Shore center fielder Collin Berguson.

Tadd Lusk from South Williamsport was a standout on the offensive side as he was able to reach base on each of his at bats.

“I haven’t seen many pitchers like them. I just go up there and see pitches and make sure I can see the ball well,” Lusk stated. “I saw quite a few pitches in the first at bat and the second one I got hit in the shoulder, but I try to see as many pitches as I can before I swing.”

Shore was able get a few scoring opportunities in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, as Berguson was on third base in the fifth and seventh and Carter Rhinehart was on in the sixth. But the Mounties were able to get out of it with the help of Gerber and Kamdyn Bubb, who came on the mound in the seventh inning and closed things out.
