Bucktail girls tennis edges out Shore in hard-fought thriller
FARWELL – On Friday afternoon, the Bucktail girls tennis team played host to cross-area Jersey Shore in what proved to be a thrilling match, coming down to the final court. In the affair, the Bucks came out on top, edging out the Bulldogs, 3-2, behind two singles and a split of doubles.
For Bucktail, Eva Sockman kept up what’s been a strong season at Singles Court 1, dropping a combined three games against Shore’s Josie Gerst. Teammate and fellow senior Lola English replicated her dominance, defeating Shore’s Molly Dalton 6-0, 6-2, setting the tone with a first-set sweep.
To make it three points for the Bucks, No. 1 duo Kelsie Wagner and McKenna Bissman also played their way to a controlled, straight-set win. They posted a gentleman’s sweep in set one before winning six of nine to take the next.
For the Bulldogs, Julia Herman posted the team’s lone victory in singles, fighting her way to a hard-fought, ten-game first set victory before sweeping Bucktail’s Kendall Wagner in the next. No. 2 duo Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski helped keep the deficit at one in straight-set fashion, surviving a tough second set to give the team its second point.
The Bucks return to action on Monday, playing host to a tough South Williamsport squad at 4 p.m. Jersey Shore takes another road trip, also on Monday, for its next match, where it’ll face Central Columbia at 4 p.m.
