Bulldogs hope to avenge playoff heartbreaker tonight
Just over 300 days ago, the Jersey Shore football team saw its promising 2024 campaign end in heartbreaking fashion, as then quarterback Elijah Jordan’s attempt at a miracle fell harmlessly to the turf in a District 4 Class AAAA title loss at Shamokin. Now, in the present, the Bulldogs have a chance to get on the right side of the matchup and avenge that loss in front of their opponent’s home crowd.
Despite the loss of do-it-all athlete Chase Pensyl, the Indians (3-0) have shown last year’s success wasn’t a one-time thing through their first three outings, outscoring their opponents 135-42 while averaging 45 points per game. Shore (3-0) has faced tough foes so far, but this still may be the toughest, a battle of undefeated Heartland-I elites.
Quarterback Logan Steele and senior backs Zakem Clinton and Jayce Ginck remain efficient on the ground, each averaging over five yards per carry. The former two have been on the scarier end of that distinction, with Clinton averaging 8.5 yards per carry with a longest run of 23 yards and Steele breaking off an 89-yard scamper against Lake-Lehman. The pair have already combined for ten touchdowns.
Though Steele’s completion percentage sits at just above 40, standout receiver Colin Steinhart gives the offense versatility and big-play potential, with eight receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns to his name. And defensively, Shamokin has surrendered just seven first-quarter and 14 first-half points in three blowouts, with its starting unit rarely bending so far.
In terms of creating a brutal challenge, Shamokin possesses plenty of components to do so. But the Bulldogs have already passed multiple tests, defeating storied – albeit unproven in 2025 – programs in Dallas (0-3) and Delaware Valley (0-3) before dismantling Selinsgrove 49-6 most recently.
Shore’s thunder-and-lightning tandem of Bo Sechrist and Cash Herritt has been next-to-unstoppable in the last two weeks, combining for 522 rushing yards and ten touchdowns on 73 attempts, good for an average of over seven yards per carry. If you love run offense, this is truly the game for you.
Sophomore quarterback Nolen Pauling is coming off his most efficient game under center and is currently completing over 65 percent of his passes, hasn’t passed under 150 yards in a game and remains a strong runner. At receiver, Luke Ryan has effectively broken out as a strong No. 2 alongside Carson Watkins.
All in all, both offenses have endless tools, and both defenses are largely proven. It isn’t a given this matchup will live up to all the Game-of-the-Week distinctions, but it certainly has that potential and certainly holds serious Heartland-I and District 4 Class 4A implications.
