Both Jersey Shore and Loyalsock went into the half tied at zero and were hoping to both get the chance to break through in the second half. At the half, Loyalsock coach Steve Ertel and his staff talked to the team and told them to go out and execute and play soccer the way they know how.
And that talked paid off.
Just seven minutes into the second half, David Bjorkman broke through with a goal and from there, it was all Loyalsock. The Lancers possessed the entire second half, rarely letting Jersey Shore get the ball, en route to a 4-0 win at home under the lights on Tuesday night.
“I just told them, as coaches we don’t accept the wins or losses, they have to go out and execute. I think they woke up and thought ‘hey, we can do this’ and they put four away,” Ertel said. “Our front runner David Bjorkman got his first goal of the season. He’s wanted it, so I think that really opened the flood gates for the team seeing that goal go in and then they took off.”
Loyalsock (3-4) kept its foot on the gas against the Bulldogs (2-4-1) and the goals seemed to keep coming.

Six minutes after Bjorkman scored off an assist from Wesley Johnson, it was the Lancers’ Luke Edmonds who lined up for a penalty kick and drilled a shot to the left for a 2-0 lead with 27:39 to play in the game.
“They played soccer in the second half,” Ertel said of his offense. “They got crosses in, they got inside out, they got possession. They did everything they were supposed to do.”
The Lancers’ out-shot Jersey Shore, 11-5, and didn’t yield many great chances to Jersey Shore to allow the Bulldogs to claw back and rally.
“Every time we have them, it’s a hard game. Plus, we’re on the turf instead of grass that we practice on. Honestly, it’s a great coached team. We knew it was going to be hard,” Jersey Shore coach Mitch Cornelius said. “We played last night too, so it was back-to-back, but I think overall, except for that span of about 10 minutes, I thought we played well. Our kids played hard and soccer sometimes, the bounces don’t go how you want it to go.”
Just about halfway through the second half, the Lancers scored their third goal when Connor Rodgers found Christian Scampone, who scored for a 3-0 lead. Loyalsock’s fourth goal came with 14:44 to play after Justus Miller assisted Aiden Wetzler for the 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs first shot on goal in the second half came with 9:10 to play.
“The thing about soccer is you can’t call time out to ask them to regroup. Sometimes I think if you could just do that once or twice a game, I think just to calm them down, I think things will change. But I’m happy with how they played, how they fought,” Cornelius said. “It’s still a lot of time left this year. I think we’re slowly approaching to the stage that we want to be at. We’ve had a tough stretch so far this year. We played some good teams, playing tough most of the games. We’ll see how things actually happen at the end of the year.”
Loyalsock’s Tyler Kennedy had a breakthrough with 9:17 to play in the first half and used his footwork to get around a Jersey Shore defender and earn a 1-v-1 look with keeper Orrin Pennycoff. Kennedy had a nice opportunity, but Pennycoff slid and blocked it as Kennedy kicked the ball. It was one of seven saves Pennycoff had to try and keep Jersey Shore in the game.
“Yes he did (have a number of saves). He’s only a tenth grader and he’s big and he’s quick and he’s just actually learning how to play,” Cornelius said. “He’s only played for two years now. So I think he’s going to get better and better.”
Jersey Shore only had five shots on goal on Tuesday, and didn’t get many chances inside of the 18 as the Lancers possessed and played well from a defensive perspective whenever the Bulldogs did get the ball.

“Of course we’ve been working on their defensive positioning,” Ertel said. “They’re able to move the ball communicate well and ultimately get the clean sheet and get the ball into the back of the net.”
Ertel knew that entering Tuesday’s home game Jersey Shore would be a tough opponent regardless of records.
“They’re great. District 4 has great coaches. Mitch and Steve (Shrodo) are great coaches. We knew they were going to be coached well and we knew we had to possess and play a good game of soccer to get through,” Ertel said. “As always, it’s great to play Steve and Mitch, it’s great to play Jersey Shore. They’re a great program, hats off to those guys. The game was played and we came out on top tonight.”
The Lancers nearly scored a fifth goal in the second half. With 23:35 to play in the game, Scampone lined up for a direct kick from 25 yards out and sent a shot high, hoping to slip it just underneath the crossbar. Instead, the shot went just high by a foot over the crossbar and narrowly missed being a stellar goal.
