Local roundup: Bellefonte cross country runners have success at NEPA Invitational
Bellefonte runners had success on Saturday morning at the NEPA Invitational.
As a team, Bellefonte finished fifth on the boys side and eighth in the girls competition.
Bellefonte sophomore Jonathan Gasper ran an outstanding race and took home a third-place finish in 16:25.70. He was behind only Northwest senior Michael Fritz (15:54.70) and Riverside’s Mikey Schimelfenig (16:22.10). Bellefonte’s Maverick Muchmore took ninth with a PR of 16:52.50.
Central Mountain’s Damien Winner ran a 17:36.20, a PR, to be the Wildcats’ highest-finishing runner. Jersey Shore’s Samuel Davis took 31st in 17:41.40.
In girls competition, Bellefonte senior Natalie Jolley took sixth place in 20:09.30 and teammate Addison Fry, a senior, ran 20:33.50 to finish in tenth.
Central Mountain competed in the event too and Emma Wolfe was the Wildcats’ highest-placing runner as she ran a 23:01.30 to take 44th.
• Wellsboro scored two second-half goals to defeat Jersey Shore, 3-1, in girls soccer. Rees Bierly scored off a Jassalyn Milbrand assist with 8:37 to play until halftime which tied the game at 1-1 before the Green Hornets’ Haylie Smith and Luna Moyer scored in the second half to seal the win.
“We came away with a 3-1 win by matching the physicality, keeping our composure, making smart runs and recognizing how our opponent was playing. The biggest factor was our defensive pressure, which set the tone for the match,” Wellsboro coach Michael Reese said. “A special mention goes to Carly Blackwell, who stepped up in goal after an injury sidelined Jadyn (Dunlap). To perform at that level with so little preparation is extraordinary, and I couldn’t be more proud of her team-first mentality.”
• The Lock Haven men’s cross country team finished sixth of 22 teams in a deep and talented field at the Lock Haven Invitational. Leading the way for Lock Haven was Brayden Frair, who finished 13th after covering the 8,000-meter course in 24:56.70.
Jakob Rager finished 23rd with a time of 25:18.10.
Cowanesque Valley graduate Kristian Mizdail (25:45.80, 43rd), Gavin Furey (25:57.30, 53rd) and Evan Klinger (26:29.60, 76th) rounded out the top five finishers for the Bald Eagles.
The top finisher in the White Race for Lock Haven was Anden Aitkins.
• The Lock Haven women’s cross country team finished 14th of 21 teams in a deep and talented field at the Lock Haven Invitational. Leading the way for Lock Haven was Kaydence Strange, who finished 49th after covering the 6,000-meter course in 23:06.10.
Katie Todd finished 73rd with a time of 23:38.10. Adra Schell (24:14.10, 100th), Emily Black (24:19.20, 103rd) and Addison Farrer (25:12.30, 137th) rounded out the top five finishers for the Bald Eagles.
• The Lock Haven volleyball team fell on the road 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 19-25) at California (Pa.) in a non-conference match. Lock Haven jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the first set of the match, 25-22, behind 15 kills and nine Vulcans errors.
However, Cal rebounded to steal the ensuing three sets to secure the match victory.
