Local roundup: Bellefonte XC competes at PIAA Foundation Invite

At the PIAA Foundation Invite, Bellefonte’s boys and girls cross country teams competed and saw success. The boys finished 15th out of 30 teams and the girls were 20th.

On the boys side, Jonathan Gasper ran the 5K course in 17:01 to take eighth and secure a medal. Maverick Muchmore followed in 17:53 for 29th and Carson Fritchman ran a 19:24. 

Gunther Kull ran a 20;31, Ethan Karmelita ran a 21:50, Kaiden Musser ran a 22:15 and Phoenix Torres ran a 24:47. There were 240 finishers in the boys race.

In girls competition, Addy Fry ran the course in 21:26 to take 24th, the highest finisher for the Red Raiders. Natalie Jolley followed close behind in 21:36 for 31st.

Rounding out the top seven for Bellefonte were Aalyn Cernuska (27:07), Emily Moretz (27:16), Haddie Lutz (27:25), Megan Showers (30:13) and Molly Showers (30;26.).

• Mifflinburg earned a tough 4-3 win against Jersey Shore thanks to Dylan Siegel’s two second-half goals. 

Jersey Shore saw Dylan Hensler, Dekin McDermitt and Jayden Passettii both score. McDermitt added an assist as well.

On Friday, Jersey Shore and Shikellamy battled to a double overtime scoreless draw as neither defense allowed their opponent to fire many shots. Shikellamy out-shot the Bulldogs just 3-1 in a game with not much offense.

• In men’s soccer, Lock Haven fell to host Millersville University, 3-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East-West match.

With the loss, Lock Haven moves to 2-3-1 overall, while Millersville improves to 2-1-2. The host Marauders scored in the 15th minute and added two second-half goals. Roy Parkyn scored twice for Millersville.

Lock Haven goalkeeper Ethan Beck finished with five saves.

• The Lock Haven volleyball team closed its weekend at the Bald Eagle Classic with an exciting five set thriller vs. Goldey-Beacom in front of the home crowd inside Thomas Fieldhouse. Goldey-Beacom took the clinching set to steal a 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 24-26, 25-17, 14-16).

The Bald Eagle Classic is a two-day event hosted by Lock Haven and features Glenville State, Goldey-Beacom, Edinboro and Bloomsburg.

Lock Haven opened strong, taking the first set 25-10 behind a dominant .325 hitting percentage and 19 team kills, but Goldey-Beacom (5-7) responded by claiming the next two frames, 25-11 and 25-14.

• The Lock Haven tennis team fell to visiting Kutztown, 6-1, at home on the Lock Haven Tennis Courts. Montoursville graduate Alaina Marchioni prevented the shutout thanks to a dominating victory at No. 3 singles. Marchioni won 6-1, 6-4.

Megan Ferris battled hard at No. 1 singles and the duo of Maci Rohrbach and Breanna Chicas was edged out in a hard-fought clash at No. 2 doubles.
