Local roundup: Shore tennis falls to Abington Heights

In girls tennis, Abington Heights blanked Jersey Shore, 5-0. Jersey Shore’s Josie Gerst played tough at No. 1 singles, but Abington Heights’ Sona Hanumal earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Jersey Shore’s Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski battled in close sets, but lost to Abington Heights’ Jenna Follansbee and Brielle Crowell, 6-3, 6-2.

• Lock Haven’s men’s soccer team fell to Findlay, 2-0, in the Bald Eagles’ home opener at Hubert Jack Stadium. Findlay, who entered the season nationally ranked, took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute of the first half before adding an insurance goal late in the second to seal the win.

Lock Haven dominated possession in the second half and led 3-1 in shots on goal, but Findlay turned away multiple scoring opportunities. Josh Horn and Patricio Zapata recorded the shots on goal for Lock Haven.

In goal, Ethan Beck had a save for Lock Haven while the defense as a whole limited Findlay to just two shots on goal.

Lock Haven is now 1-2-1 and hosts Shippensburg in non-conference action on Wednesday.

• The Lock Haven women’s soccer team hosted 23rd-ranked Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest in Lock Haven’s home opener and Senior Day for the program. Kutztown won the match 3-1.

The Bald Eagles honored seniors Abi Amaya, Jakayla Holmes, Lauren Straub, Quelyn Nepa, Olivia Hudson, Leana Cuzzocrea, Emmie Parks, Emily Reeve, Makayla Grace Weber, Megan Miller and Julia Tavares prior to the start of the match.

Trailing 2-0 with just under 30 minutes to go, Lock Haven cut the lead in half when Bryn Constanzer buried her first goal of the season.

• The Lock Haven (1-4) volleyball team took down Virginia Union in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (17-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9), on day two of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13. The Bald Eagles fell to the host, 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 15-25), in their final match of the day.

Lock Haven stormed past Virginia Union in a five-set thriller, 3-2, to collect its first win of the season.

The Bald Eagles rallied behind the stellar play of outside hitter Maddie Mitchell, who hammered home a season-high 19 kills

For Lock Haven against West Virginia Wesleyan, Wolzen and Mitchell each finished with a team-high 12 kills. Wolzen led the Bald Eagles’ in scoring with 13.5 points.

Mitchell added 11 digs, while Taylor finished with a team-high 12.
