Shore football looks to improve to 5-1 at Williamsport

MARK NANCE/For the Express Jersey Shore players charge onto the field before their first game of the season.
Last Friday, the Jersey Shore football team saw the disappointment of its Week 4 loss to Shamokin carry into a slow start against Shikellamy before outscoring the Braves 28-7 through the second half. Come Week 6, it’ll look to replicate the dominance of the latter portion of that 42-14 win in another Heartland-I matchup against Williamsport (4-1).
It’s worth noting that the Bulldogs just routed a team that defeated the Millionaires by three touchdowns in Week 4, indicating a dip in difficulty following a tough stretch. But Williamsport offers plenty of reasons for Shore to not get too complacent, on top of it playing host on Friday.
Sophomore quarterback Tevin Williams has proven to be a problem as both a passer and runner, accumulating almost 950 yards of total offense while completing 53-percent of his throws and doing a solid job limiting mistakes. He and senior running back Giovanni White each average 6.9 yards per carry, giving the Shore defense multiple effective rushers to keep an eye on, with White also proving effective as a receiver.
Despite their tough Week 4 loss, the Millionaires did a good job bouncing back the following Friday, defeating Selinsgrove on the road. Still, Jersey Shore (4-1) did beat them by 39 points the last time the two faced off, and it has plenty of other reasons to be confident.
Senior running back Bo Sechrist is coming off the best outing of his career out of the backfield, turning 21 carries into 220 yards – good for an average of 10.5 yards per carry – and three touchdowns to fore-front another performance in which the Bulldogs surpassed 300 yards on the ground. He and sophomore Kash Herritt have proven incredibly capable as a thunder-lightning duo, and Nolen Pauling remains solid under center.
Defensively, Shore also bounced back well from an early 78-yard touchdown connection between Shikellamy’s Brody Rebuck and Thomas Pollock last Friday. From that moment on, it largely held the Braves’ offense in check, with that play making up almost half their yardage on the night.
With a win on Friday, the Bulldogs will have started 5-1 in back-to-back stint amidst a tough two-year cycle. The question is, which version of the team will we see in reference to last Friday’s tale of two halves?
Friday’s game is set for 7 p.m. at Millionaire stadium.
