WINGATE – Leaving it all on the field Thursday, the Bald Eagle Area girls soccer team came of age as they battled Penns Valley in their final regular season game in Laurel Highlands play.

With a chance to find their way into the postseason, the Lady Eagles battled back from an early deficit and scored late in the second half on a goal from Savanna Albright and held on for the 2-1 victory over the Rams. However, they fell just one game short of that district slot, as Central Cambria won their game to make claim of it.

Nonetheless, though bittersweet, there was plenty of pride to go around when it was all said and done.

“I’m very proud of them. It’s unfortunate that we’re done,” said Bald Eagle coach Jared Moore. “It’s unfortunate we did our end of it but you know how it goes. You win a couple more games and you don’t have to worry about this one. “But I am proud of them. From where we were in the beginning to where we are now and in between. This is a good end.”

Early on, the Lady Rams got their transition game going, giving Elle Dinges a chance to end the stalemate early. But it would be the Bald Eagle defense that came up big there, as it was able to recover and end the threat almost immediately.

With both teams trying to establish momentum, it was the Lady Eagles that would get their offense rolling along. They would go on a time-consuming drive of almost 10 minutes where they pushed two shots at Penns Valley goalie Emma Marks. But Marks, who finished with seven saves, was automatic and continued to keep the Eagles from taking the lead.

In the first, the Penns Valley offense scored first. Just minutes in, Dinges found a gap and sent a shot past Cami Walker at the 33:58 mark to take an early 1-0 advantage.

From there, Bald Eagle Area freshman goalie Cami Walker would play like a veteran, finishing with a game-high 14 saves and keeping the Rams off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Six of those would come in the second half when her team needed it the most.

And while it took some time, the Bald Eagle Area offense would eventually get going, battling back to tie the contest at one. At the 13:02 mark, sophomore Addison Tice smoked a kick that ricocheted off a Penns Valley defender into the goal to tie it at 1-1.

From there, the momentum was slowly moving in the Eagles side of the field as its defense held as did the Lady Rams.

With the game still tied heading into the second half, the Eagles came out of the intermission with their game faces on. They would push the ball down into the Penns Valley backfield, starting to click on all cylinders and beginning to take over possession of the ball.

Both defenses took over the contest as both sides were able to protect the tie. The game moved under the 20-minute mark in the second without another score on the board.

Bald Eagle found its chance to put a potential game-winning goal on the board and went for it. At the 16:24 mark in the second half, almost 40 minutes after the previous goal, Albright sailed a screamer over the head of Marks into the back of the net, putting the young Eagles ahead 2-1.

That would be an advantage they would not relinquish. Defensively, Bald Eagle put a stranglehold on their side and refused to allow a game-tying goal from the opportunistic Ram offense.
