BEA volleyball advances to D6 AA final, clinches state bid with sweep vs. Central Cambria

WINGATE – Punching their ticket to the Big Show!
The Bald Eagle Area and Central Cambria volleyball teams renewed their rivalry Thursday as they met in the District 6 Class AA semifinals, hoping to give themselves a shot at Saturday’s title. In their first meeting in the LHAC championship, the Red Devils got the best of the Lady Eagles in a thrilling 3-2 victory.
This time, with a trip to the District 6 Championship as well as state competition on the line, Bald Eagle was locked in and laser-focused on the job at hand, as they would be crowned the winner on Thursday night on their home court, sweeping the Red Devils, 3-0, behind set scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 27-25.
“They came out so solidly. They had each other’s backs the entire game,” said Bald Eagle Area coach Taylor Geidroc. “I thought on Tuesday we were lacking energy but I thought tonight they came out focused and ready to play.”
In the first set, the Lady Eagles proved that not even a quick start by Central Cambria was going to keep them from there mission.

Tied at one, Central Cambria forced a side out on a blast by Erica Brouse. Katie Benko stood at the service line and rolled off five consecutive service points to give the Red Devils a 7-1 advantage.
Both teams would battle through five consecutive side outs before the Eagles would start their trek back at the lead. And trailing 9-3, Bald Eagle got the ball back in their possession after a strong block at the net by teammates Leah Bryan and Casey Angellotti.
Bryan led her team with her senior leadership, scoring from different positions on the court.
Standing tall at the line was Kinsey Clark as she was able to go on a 3-0 run with three service points. Through the run, she posted an ace and Addelyn Fisher added a block. And when the dust settled, Bald Eagle cut into the lead trailing by two at 9-7.
The Eagles stayed within striking distance from as the Red Devils held a close lead of 19-16. After a Central Cambria side out cut it to 19-17, the Eagles would make yet another run to try to take the lead.

Two service points by Harlee Witherite, tied the contest for the first time since the beginning of the match. A side out by both teams, tied the game once again. Then, the Eagles tied the game on their side out thanks to a blast by Bryan as she found the back corner, making it 22-22.
Momentum wise, that effort wouldn’t stop at just the tie.
With a block and a blast by Bryan, Angellotti earned three consecutive service points to give her team the lead for the first time in the contest at 23-22. From there, the home team was able to outscore the Red Devils 2-1 to take the first set.
Opening the second set, the Lady Eagles used the game one momentum and scored six consecutive points to start the game. In this run, Angellotti was helped by strong front row play by Emily Smith.
However, in the post season no lead is safe, as Central Cambria battled back and eventually took the lead at 11-10. But despite the run, the Eagles stayed composed, regrouped and got back on track.

The game stayed close as the Eagles broke a 17-17 tie on a side out on a blast by Fisher. From there, Bryan approached the serving line and sizzled from it.
Bryan and company rattled off the final seven points they needed to take set two. Featured in the final run was a Bryan blast and two blocks from Fisher and Angellotti. And Bryan ended the game in grand fashion, placing down an ace to put Bald Eagle 25-17.
In the final set, Central Cambria would not go away without a fight as they came back from a three-point deficit to push the Eagles to the brink at 25-25.
But in crunch time, the Eagles once again showed why they advanced to the title tilt as they rattled off two consecutive points to close the contest, sending them to Altoona for a shot at a District 6 Class AAA title and earning a PIAA state berth in the process.
The title is set to begin at 2 p.m. at Altoona on Saturday. There, the Eagles will face the winner of top-seeded Richland and No. 5 seed Forest Hills.
