BELLEFONTE – They left it all on the field.
After a marathon contest over the weekend against Bishop Guilfoyle in the Laurel Highlands where the Raiders lost in heartbreaking fashion in a shootout, the Bellefonte squad went up against yet another Laurel Highlands foe in Tyrone.
The semifinal round of District 6 Class AAA action put these two teams against each other, and it would be an all-out battle from the beginning whistle to the final buzzer.
The two teams would end regulation tied at two. But early in the second overtime, the Golden Eagles’ Grant Miller would hit a penalty kick to end the Red Raiders’ season, advancing to the District 6 Class AAA final with a 3-2 win.
The two would be embroiled in a very physical contest that had all the ups and down of a rollercoaster. Momentum shifted back-and-forth the entire extended contest.

“Up 2-0 we kind of lost our composure a little bit. I talked to them earlier abou, ‘You have to keep your composure.’ We lost our composure and allowed them to score those two goals,” said Bellefonte head coach Scott Martz. “That gave them all the momentum they needed right there. But they fought hard. Played hard. It was a good season for us.”
After a scoreless first overtime period, the two teams headed into the second and final overtime period looking to end it then and there. The Golden Eagles were able to push the ball up the field and get the ball to Miller, who was looking to turn and get a chance to drive toward the net.
However, he would go to the penalty-kick line after a foul in the box. Miller hit a shot towards the corner of the net to give his team the win.
In the first, the Red Raiders and Tyrone found themselves leaning on the defensive backline time after time. Both came up clutch when called upon. For most of the first half, the teams battled with only a total of three shots total being shot.
However, the lone shot by Bellefonte would prove to pay dividends for Bellefonte as Connell Stabinger blasted an unassisted shot past Tyrone goalie Devin Nardelli at the 8:27 mark of the opening half.

Neither team was able to find the net again as the Red Raiders led 1-0 when the halftime buzzer sounded.
Coming out of the break, Bellefonte came out with a strong urgency to add to its lead. While in transition, the Red Raiders drove the ball down towards the Golden Eagle end, forcing a corner kick.
Stabinger laid the ball down, stepped into the kick and sent it to the middle of the goal area, where a rushing Austin Larson picked it up and plastered it into the back of the net for Bellefonte’s second goal.
But Tyrone refused to go down without a fight as they got on the scoreboard nine minutes later. There, Miles Smearman snuck one past the Red Raiders goalie for the unassisted goal at 28:03, cutting the lead in half 2-1.
With each passing tick of the clock, the intensity and physicality level increased at a fever pace. Bellefonte’s defense was hanging tight as the clock ticked to under ten minutes, then five.
