BELLEFONTE – On Tuesday evening, the Bellefonte girls soccer team went to battle with a 12-2 Clearfield team. With a constant rain starting just before the game, the two teams had to battle Mother Nature as well playing in slick conditions.

In a game that was closer than the score would indicate, the Bison went home the winners of a 5-2 Laurel Highlands match up at Bellefonte’s Rogers Stadium. The Bison were led by a hat trick by Mia Smith, who had all of her goals in the second half, two occurring under the ten-minute mark.

Clearfield led in shots by a 17-11 advantage. Both teams finished with three corners each. Bellefonte goalie Roni Spotts finished with seven saves while Clearfield goalkeeper Mia Helsel had four in the win.

“I am pretty happy with their performance tonight. I know the score was 5-2 at the end, but I don’t think it’s reflective of how our girls played,” said Bellefonte girl soccer head coach Stacey Miller. “I don’t think the score reflects the quality play that they had. I was pretty proud coming out and putting two on a 12-2 team. They are a good team.”

The Lady Raiders got off to a strong start as they were able to take an early advantage. Just minutes into the game, Bellefonte found itself with an early 1-0 lead.

Madyson Miller found the back of the net, as she posted an unassisted goal at 37:44. The Lady Raiders used that momentum and were able to play tough as a result, especially early on from its backline.

The game was a back-and-forth battle with both defenses making strong plays. Bellefonte goalie Roni Spotts came up big, holding off numerous Bison runs. She had five saves through the first half.

Neither team was able to score for the next 10 minutes of play. Then, the Lady Raiders built on their lead thanks to an Addalyn DeWeese goal, who was assisted on the shot by Brooke Whitman at the 27:07 mark.

But after going up 2-0 early, the tide slowly started to turn Clearfield’s way, as they began to take control of possession. Bellefonte was able to hold off the hard-charging Bison for most to the half.

But with 7:11 left, Clearfield’s Lydia Evans plastered an unassisted goal into the back of the next, cutting Bellefonte’s lead to 2-1. Then, with time running out in the stanza, MyLeigh Hudson was able to log a second for the Bison with 46 seconds left, tying the contest at 2-2 going into the break.

The second half continued to be a battle for momentum as both teams knocked at the door, missing opportunities thanks to strong defensive play on both sides.

However, just seconds short of the halfway mark, Mia Smith gave the Bison their first lead as she connected on a shot to the corner of the net. The Red Raiders stayed within one until there was less than ten minutes to go before Smith added her second and third goals at near than nine and four-minute marks respectively, ultimately sealing the victory.

Bellefonte will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Philipsburg-Osceola.
