Shore football endures most lopsided defeat since 2019, falls to Hollidaysburg, 52-7

JERSEY SHORE – On Friday night at Thompson Street Stadium, the Jersey Shore football team played host to Hollidaysburg (7-0) in a highly-anticipated battle of state-ranked opponents. While the Bulldogs (5-2) matched up well initially, the wheels started to fall off in the second and fully imploded midway through the third, transitioning into the program’s most lopsided loss of the 2020s.

Behind consistent big plays, the Golden Tigers were able to rack up 380 yards on the ground to the tune of a first down per carry. Four Shore interceptions, including two that were turned into pick sixes, didn’t help matters, as Hollidaysburg’s quickly growing momentum turned into 52 unanswered points and an eventual 52-7 rout.

For the Bulldogs, it was the first time they’ve suffered a six-score loss since 2019, when the team fell to Southern Columbia by a score of 56-14. This defeat just so happened to occur exactly six years after the previous rout.

“Give Hollidaysburg all the credit. They played with a lot of energy, a lot of physicality. By far the most physical team we’ve played in quite a while, and I’m talking years,” said Jersey Shore head coach Tom Gravish on their Week 7 opponent.

“We’re not gonna quit on our kids, we love our kids. We’re gonna get right back after it for Penn Wood next week. Some of us will probably get to prepping a bit tonight. I’m sure no one’s going to sleep early tonight.”

Separate the first 23 minutes from the last 25, and one side looks a lot better than the first.

Though Jersey Shore kicked things off with a three-and-out on its opening drive, then allowed Hollidaysburg to get to the doorstep of its end zone, the defense managed to stuff the Golden Tigers, forcing a turnover on downs after Hollidaysburg got all the way to its three-yard line. Then, the Bulldogs immediately put together their best drive of the night.

On a drive that started at their own eight-yard line, they’d run the no huddle to perfection, getting Hollidaysburg off-balanced defensively and picking up six first downs behind a balanced attack that featured nine runs and six passes. Bo Sechrist capped off the 15-play, 92-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown, and Shore was in business.

But Shore’s 7-0 lead wouldn’t survive a single defensive play as Hollidaysburg running back Carter Muth (11 rushes, 167 yards) turned on the jets on a 74-yard touchdown on a slam to the right. The cracks steadily began to show from there, as multiple dropped passes prevented it from putting together another offensive drive.

“We had a decent quarter-and-a-half there, but we missed some plays, dropped a couple balls with guys the ball,” said Gravish. “(Hollidaysburg) played great defense, and we didn’t have one of our weapons (Kash Herritt), so that kind of changed some things for us approach-wise.”

Those cracks would quickly widen.

Another big run gave the Golden Tigers a 14-7 lead. Then, two interceptions from quarterback Nolen Pauling led to ten additional points, one coming with just under 30 seconds to go in the half. And though the team had time to re-establish itself at the break, the pass game came out just as shaky.

Two interceptions turned into four just eight minutes into the third, both of which were returned for touchdowns by Hollidaysburg defensive back Josh Banks.

Banks made three of those and attributed both pick sixes, from 40 and 33 yards out respectively. And offensively, Muth and quarterback Cole Delattre combined for 311 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 25 attempts. Those three standouts presented a problem for the Bulldogs, one they could never solve.

“Their No. 1 (Banks) and No. 4 (Delattre), they’re exceptional,” said Gravish. “They’re next level players, and they just made some great plays.”

For Jersey Shore, Sechrist still put together a decent day running back, leading the offense with 68 yards and the team’s lone touchdown on 15 attempts. Pauling played an exceptional first before things unraveled, completing his first seven passes. And defensively, the team posted four sacks, a big reason it hung firm early.

The loss stings, as Shore went into Friday’s matchup confident it could fight a similar fight to last year’s contest, which came down to the last play. But Gravish is confident his team can bounce back. It’ll look to do so against Penn Wood (1-5) in Week 8, with that game set for Friday at 7 p.m. at Thompson Street Stadium.

“Ohio State lost two games last year and still won a national championship. LSU lost two games (in 2007) and won one too,” said Gravish. “So, we’ll go right back to the drawing and try to win next week.”
