Jersey Shore had a pair of players compete in the District 4 girls tennis singles tournament on Saturday at Williamsport High School. While neither were able to a dance to Monday’s semifinals, both had success Saturday.

Josie Gerst earned a first-round win with a close 6-3, 6-3 win over Wellsboro’s Olivia Gage. In the second round, however, Gerst suffered a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Hughesville’s Rebecca Roberts.

The Bulldogs’ other standout was Julia Herman, who was in the bottom portion of the bracket. Herman also earned a first-round win as she defeated Lewisburg’s Christina Zheng, 6-0, 6-4, to advance. In the second round, Herman lost to third-seeded Cali Barnes of Montgomery, who won 6-0, 6-2.

Monday’s semifinals consists of Danville’s Josie Bendle, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, facing South Williamsport’s Mylee Morrison and South Williamsport’s Emma McLaughlin facing second-seeded Georgia Randall of Hughesville.

Bendle defeated Muncy’s Zoe Dohl, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round and then defeated Roberts, 6-1, 6-0, to advance. Morrison upset fifth-seeded Days Weis of Lewisburg, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round and earned a 6-0, 6-2 win in the quarterfinals over Montgomery’s Madisyn Miller.

McLaughlin, seeded sixth in the tournament, defeated Central Columbia’s Sydney Barry, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round and then beat third-seeded Barnes of Montgomery, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Randall won easily in the second round over North Penn-Liberty’s Annabella Johns, 6-0, 6-0, and then had an exciting three-set match in the quarterfinals against Danville’s Gyovanna Sundaresan. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Randall battled to win the second set 6-3 to force the decisive third set. Randall then won, 6-3, to secure a semifinal trip.

The semifinals are set for Monday at 1 p.m. at the Central PA Tennis Center with the finals to follow.

Morrison or McLaughlin will look to be South Williamsport’s first District 4 singles champion since two-time state champion Olivia Dorner won four in a row from 2018-21. Randall could extend Hughesville’s streak to three straight District 4 singles titles with a win on Monday as Sarah Buck won the last two titles for Hughesville. Bendle is looking to become the Ironmen’s first District 4 singles champion since Michelle Wood in 2003.
