Three area soccer teams set for Thursday playoff matchups

On Thursday, two area boys soccer teams – Central Mountain and Bellefonte – and one girls team – Bellefonte – will attempt to keep their seasons alive in their first playoff matches of 2025.

The Wildcats travel to Hollidaysburg to face the No. 1 seeded Golden Tigers in the District 6 Class AAA quarterfinals, with that game set for 8 p.m. And for Bellefonte, both teams – seeding No. 2 – host in what will be a District 6 Class AAA quarterfinal doubleheader, with the girls hosting Somerset at 5:30 and the boys hosting Tyrone at 8.

For Central Mountain (8-6-3), it’ll have its hands full as it takes on a team that wrapped up the season with a 15-2-1 record with wins over playoff teams such as Altoona – who defeated the Wildcats 4-1 in their regular season finale, Tyrone, Huntingdon and Bald Eagle Area.

However, it has the luxury of going into the matchup having battled numerous tough squad.

Of its eight wins, six came against teams that qualified for districts this season, with its most notable wins coming over highly-seeded squads in Penns Valley, Northumberland Christian and Midd-West. It also tied Selinsgrove, the No. 2 seed in District 4 Class AAA.

For the Bellefonte boys, they enter the District 6 Class AAA bracket looking to repeat as champions. Though they fell short of earning the top seed, they defeated top-seeded Hollidaysburg, 2-0, in what ended up being a ten-game win streak, heading into the tournament fresh off an impressive regular season.

Alongside that win over the Golden Tigers, the Red Raiders also defeated Penns Valley twice, Huntingdon by five goals and Bald Eagle Area in an all-out thriller. And in their lone matchup against the Golden Eagles this season, they won emphatically by a score of 4-1.

Tyrone (12-6) overcame a rough midseason stretch that saw it drop four of five, defeating Huntingdon and Westmont Hilltop on the road before falling, 2-1, to Hollidaysburg in its regular-season finale.

And for the Bellefonte girls, they’re facing an opponent that’s had a turbulent road to the playoffs.

After winning four in a row to improve to 7-3, Somerset (9-8-1) won just two of its final eight games, including two 5-2 losses to Bishop Carroll and Forest Hills to close out the campaign. However, it has defeated some tough teams, with wins over playoff teams in Bishop Carroll, Penn Cambria and Central Cambria.

The Red Raiders dealt with similar turbulence early on, dropping four games in a row to fall below .500 after starting 3-0.

However, they bounced back in a big way to close out the regular season, finishing 6-2 to claim the bracket’s No. 2 seed with a 10-6 record. Their marquee wins came against playoff teams in Penns Valley (twice), Penn Cambria, Central Cambria, Huntingdon and Tyrone.

With plenty of action set for Thursday, one question clouds the rest. Who has what it takes to keep their seasons alive heading into next week?
