Bald Eagles win thriller in OT vs. Roberts Wesleyan

LOCK HAVEN — Dean Coleman-Newsome drilled a three at the buzzer to send the game to overtime and the Lock Haven men’s basketball team outscored Roberts Wesleyan 12-7 in the free period to secure an 88-83 come-from-behind victory at home in Thomas Fieldhouse on Monday night.

With the victory, Lock Haven improved to 3-2 overall and Roberts Wesleyan falls to 1-4 on the year.

Roberts Wesleyan took its largest lead, 65-49, with 8:17 to go in the game, but Lock Haven got red-hot from three and outscored the Red Hawks, 24-10 over the ensuing seven minutes to trim the deficit to three with 43 seconds remaining.

The Red Hawks went 1 of 2 at the line on their next possession to set up the dramatic final play in regulation.

Coleman-Newsome accepted a handoff from Dyllon Scott at the top of the key and drove to the baseline where he hit a turnaround triple at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

Lock Haven comeback was highlighted by a game-high 14 three pointers, including eight in the second half alone.

The second-half comeback was also sparked by Mike Green, who knocked down 6 of 10 3-pointers for a total of 18 points off the bench. Green finished with a positive 26 in plus-minus in his minutes played.

In overtime, Lock Haven stormed out on a 10-2 run, capped off by an ally-oop dunk by Blake Deegan, to put an exclamation point on the victory. Coleman-Newsome netted a team-high 19 points, dished out seven assists and pulled in five rebounds.

For Lock Haven, Scott finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while Deegan finished with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double. Deegan also plucked two steals and blocked a shot.

Devon Nelson chipped in nine points and was a key contributor off the bench, especially during the overtime period.

Both teams shot well from behind the arch and finished with 14 makes, but Lock Haven shot 75% (12 of 16) from the line, compared to 42% (5 of 12) from the Red Hawks.

The Bald Eagles have the weekend off before returning home to Thomas Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Dec. 3 (7 p.m.) to host Penn State-Hazleton in a non-conference game.
