Local roundup: LHU men’s hoops earns win, women come up shy vs. Concord

Dean Coleman-Newsome made a layup as time closed to zero to lift the Lock Haven men’s basketball team to a thrilling 68-67 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on the final day of the Atlantic Region Challenge on Saturday.

With the victory, Lock Haven improves to 1-1, while WVW falls to 0-2. Trailing 67-66 with 14 seconds to go, Coleman-Newsome went one-on-one straight to the cup and kissed it off the glass for the game-winning basket to propel the Bald Eagles to their first victory of the season.

Luke Kennevan led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-12 shots from the floor and added a team-high seven rebounds. Keith Warren finished with 14 points, while Dyllon Scott led the second unit with 13 points and five rebounds.

Coleman-Newsome and Blake Deegan both finished with a pair of steals. In the first half, West Virginia Wesleyan led 12-2 in points-off-turnovers to carry a 41-37 lead into the break.

However, Lock Haven opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 43-41 lead with just under 19 minutes to go.

• The Lock Haven women’s basketball team wrapped up its weekend at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference vs. Mountain East Conference Challenge by taking on the host Concord as LHU fell, 77-68.

Alana Robinson led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-19 shots from the floor. The senior also blocked two shots. Madeline Evans secured her second straight double-double to open the season, finishing with 16 points, 14 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Jenadia Jordan chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Rhlyn Rouse also added eight rebounds. Sydney Lear led the second unit with 10 points in 18 minutes.

After a 17-17 first period, Lock Haven outscored Concord 18-11 in the second to lead by seven points heading into the break. However, Concord outscored The Haven 49-33 in the second half, behind five triples and 14 free throws in the final quarter, to come from behind to steal the victory.

Neither team shot above 40 percent from the floor, but Concord made up the difference in scoring by leading 8-2 in shots made from behind the arch. Lock Haven knocked down just 2-of-14 shots from deep and 26-of-41 shots at the foul line.

• The Lock Haven women’s volleyball team closed its season beating the West Chester Golden Rams 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-12) in a PSAC match. The Bald Eagles finish the season 10-18, and 6-8 in PSAC East play. This season marks the first time since 2015 the Bald Eagles had six or more wins in conference play.

Lock Haven led in each category, such as kills (43-33), assists (42-29), and blocks (7-6) on the way to the win.

Leading the charge for Lock Haven was Lola Coulter with a team-high 13 kills, with Maddie Mitchell adding nine of her own.

Madelyn Wagner and Gabby Gealey combined to dish out 40 assists, with Olivia Taylor setting up two of her own. Gracelynn Wolzen led the match with three aces for The Haven.
