Central Mountain’s Kunes, Bald Eagle’s Judice claim King of the Mountain gold for first time

RALPH WILSON/For the Express Central Mountain's Aiden Kunes wrestles Bald Eagle's Dawson Lomison at 145 for first place in the final rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

MILL HALL – After a strong start to his sophomore campaign, a knee injury held Aiden Kunes back through its second half. The Central Mountain standout still managed to build off his freshman year, upping his win total at states and reaching the blood round, but that wasn’t what he had in mind for himself heading the season.

Since then, Kunes has put himself in the best position to remain healthy, opting to home school to give himself more time to recover while continuing to focus on his improvement. And through his first two tournaments of the 2025-26 season, fresh and skilled as ever, his full potential has been on display.

On Saturday at Central Mountain’s annual King of the Mountain tournament, the junior headlined a strong weekend for the area, finishing as one of its two champions and five championship finalists. He and Bald Eagle Area senior Caden Judice earned their first career gold medals at the event – with the third time marking the charm for both, and Kunes had the added bonus of doing it in front of his home crowd.

“It feels amazing,” said Kunes on the accomplishment. “I put in a lot of work in the offseason. Got to do it in front of my home crowd and show them what I’ve done all year, all offseason.”

It wasn’t a matter of breezing through the bracket either. Upon reaching the championship quarterfinals at 145, Kunes never faced another wrestler ranked outside the Top 15 in the state. And through those state-ranked matchups, the Air Force commit gave up just two points.

RALPH WILSON/For the Express Central Mountain's Aiden Kunes wrestles Canon-McMillan's Collier Hartman at 145 during the semifinal rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

He blanked No. 13 Wyatt Long by 7-0 decision to set up a top-three matchup against No. 3 Collier Hartman (Canon-McMillan) in championship semis. And with a reversal out of bottom to kick off the second period there, he clinched his first King of the Mountain final bid behind a 2-0 decision, where he’d face No. 9 Dawson Lomison (Bald Eagle).

With the score knotted at 0-0 late in the first, Kunes absorbed a shot from Lomison before circling around the Eagle, getting a hold of him from behind and driving him to the mat for a takedown. He’d add an escape and takedown to his 3-0 lead early in the second, and though Lomison secured two escapes to narrow the gap to five, Kunes held firm and posted a late takedown for a 10-2 decision.

“I think on my feet was where I beat a lot of people,” said Kunes when discussing what worked for him throughout the run. “People have trouble with my leg attacks, fakes and re-attacks, and I feel like that’s the best part of my game.”

“The kid I had in the semis, he’s a great opponent. Took fourth at states last year. This was just a great showing of what I can do,” he added on the run.

Like Kunes, Judice endured a challenging Saturday slate, with all three of his opponents on the day ranking in the state’s Top 20. In every match, the senior established control with a takedown within the first three minutes before holding firm for three composed decisions, never trailing through his run at the event.

RALPH WILSON/For the Express Bald Eagle's Caden Judice wrestles Northampton's Chase Grabfelder at 152 for first place in the final rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

After defeating No. 20 Carter Stouch (Boyertown) by 8-3 decision and No. 12 Julian Bertucci (Burrell) by 7-3 decision, the Lock Haven commit put his best foot forward to clinch gold, doing so in his toughest matchup of the tournament against No. 6 Chase Grabfelder (Northampton).

Amidst a scramble at the end of the first period, Judice wrapped around Grabfelder and caught his opponent’s attempt to roll out of the grip, driving him into the mat for a takedown just before the buzzer sounded. He’d secure two more takedowns from there, one in each period, staying in control for the match’s entirety to carve out a 10-3 decision.

“I stuck to my offense, focused on scoring points and just surrendered the outcome. That was the big thing for me,” said Judice on the run. “Had just been focusing on winning too much and this week, I just kind of let it fly. Was focused on scoring points and getting takedowns, and it worked out.”

“Just staying humble and getting ready for next week. We have a really tough schedule, so I’m just happy that I was able to produce, wrestle well and see my hard work’s paying off,” he added.

In championship finals, Judice was joined by two teammates in Lomison (145) and junior Tanner Guenot (139), with Lomison reaching the first-place bout for the first time and Guenot returning after reaching it as a freshman.

RALPH WILSON/For the Express Bald Eagle Area's Caden Judice wrestles Burrell's Julian Bertucci at 152 during the semifinal rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

Each ultimately suffered tough losses to close out their runs but still saw plenty of positives. Lomison picked up arguably the biggest win of his career (outside of postseason), edging out No. 3 Patrick Woloshyn (Council Rock South) by 5-4 decision. And Guenot made it back to the championship after fifth as a sophomore.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back into the practice room and getting better at what I didn’t do right. Hopefully, close the gap and win that match at the end of the year,” said Guenot. “It just makes me hungrier. It just makes me want to get better.”

“I had a really good tournament,” said Lomison. “It’s still really early in the season, and I’m glad I got a good result. I’m just trying to compound throughout the year.”

Rounding out the area’s finalists was Bellefonte senior Jackson Long, who took silver at 189.

Despite facing two opponents – No. 7 Jayden Imler and No. 5 Tyler Ulrich – that outranked him on his way to the final, he found a way to win each of those matches in thrilling fashion before falling just short in a similar matchup against No. 8 Hayden Harvey (Montoursville).

RALPH WILSON/For the Express Bald Eagle Area's Tanner Guenot wrestles Burrell's Jake Stewart at 139 during the semifinal rounds on the King of the Mountain high school boys wrestling tournament at Central Mountain on Saturday.

Four area athletes made the third-place bouts at their respective weights in Central Mountain’s Gavin Heverly (121), Bellefonte’s Ezra Swisher (160) and Luke Hockenberry (215) and Gage Gardner, all which fell but managed to breach the top half of the podium. Heverly, Hockenberry and Gardner lost those matches by just one point, all in against opponents that outranked them.

Central Mountain’s Patrick Tarantella (133), Hayes Donley (139), Todd Caris (215) and Hayes Henry (285) closed out their runs on a high note, winning their seventh-place bouts. And Bellefonte’s Collin Harter (107) and Wyatt Long (145) scraped into a podium visit with eighth-placing showings, with Harter doing so as a freshman.

It was a strong overall tournament for the area, which saw 15 athletes medal and nine finish in the top four. Central Mountain earned 123 team points to finish seventh overall, and Bald Eagle Area and Bellefonte placed 11th and 14th respectively out of 30 teams.
