Central Mountain, Bellefonte set for tough tests at District 6 Class AAA Duals

MILL HALL - It isn't often that the term 'four-peat' can be brought up in any sport. Four-peats have occurred just five times in major professional sports - two coming from one streak from the Boston Celtics in the 1960s. They're a bit more common in college or high school sports, but not by much.

However, Central Mountain wrestling stands just two wins away from surpassing the rare milestone. On Saturday, the Wildcats (11-0) enter District 6 Class AAA Duals as defending champs for the third straight season, looking to secure their fourth straight title and trip to PIAA Duals.

Central Mountain once again occupies the top seed in the four-team tournament, though the seeding within this year's slate did come down to the final week. Considering the event's battles in recent years and the district's consistent competitiveness, it isn't underestimating anybody when it walks into its home gym on Saturday.

The Wildcats host No. 4 seeded State College (14-4) at 3 p.m. On the other side of the gym, No. 2 Bellefonte (13-3) faces No. 3 Altoona (12-2), with that match also set for 3 p.m.

"All four teams that get in are top quality teams," said Central Mountain head coach Biff Walizer following the team's regular-season finale against Jersey Shore last Thursday. "So, we're just focusing on putting a good weekend together and hopefully, staying healthy. That's an important piece at this point of the season."

The matchup marks the fourth consecutive time Central Mountain and State College have kicked off district duals against each other, with the Wildcats winning all three prior matches.

They most recently won 44-18 to advance to last year's final, where they ended up edging out Altoona in a thriller for their third straight championship. The teams also met in the final in 2023. There, Central Mountain used six pins to win 36-34, kicking off its current streak.

The Little Lions - ranked No. 21 in the state - head into the matchup with a stout cast, with eight of their 13 starters possessing winning records. Six of those happen to be ranked in the state in No. 22 Noah Young (114), No. 14 Luke Young (121), No. 11 Kael Davis (127), No. 3 James Whitbred (152), No. 13 Teag Sanderson (172) and No. 21 Noah Williams (189).

For comparison, Central Mountain - ranked No. 17 in the state - sees 11 of its 13 starters sporting winning records heading into Saturday. Four of them are state-ranked in No. 13 Gavin Heverly (127), No. 11 Patrick Tarantella (133), No. 26 Hayes Donley (139) and No. 2 Aiden Kunes (145).

The match has the potential to be back-and-forth, as the teams swap advantages from start to finish. Matchups are somewhat of a mystery until lineups are set on Saturday, but potential toss-up bouts worth keeping an eye out far are Heverly and Davis at 127 and Kunes and Whitbred at 152 (if Kunes is moved up to combat State College's biggest strength).

Each team picked up steam as the season went on, with State College winning three of its last four state-ranked matchups - falling just short against No. 12 Altoona - and Central Mountain scoring 50 or more points in its last six bouts - four in which it surpassed 60. From a team, depth and talent standpoint, Saturday's semifinal has the makings of a tight one.

RAIDERS' RETURN

On the other side of the bracket, Bellefonte (13-3) looks to keep one of its more successful dual seasons in recent memory alive against a very even foe in Altoona. The appearance marks its first in district duals since 2023 and first at the Class AAA level since 2022. Two more wins would send it to team states for the first time since 2021.

Each team fell just short of securing the No. 1 seed, with the Mountain Lions holding it for most of the season before enduring two losses at Bison Duals and Bellefonte's late surge being enough to propel in over Altoona, but not Central Mountain. They have the track records, depth and talent to warrant title projections.

On Altoona's side, ten of its 13 starters possess winning records, with five being state-ranked in No. 19 Dominic Picciotti (107), No. 28 Dom Nardozza (114), No. 3 Deklan Barr (127), No. 5 Braiden Weaver (133) and No. 3 Gavin Ciampoli (160). The Mountain Lions also have state-ranked wins over No. 8 Chestnut Ridge (38-31), No. 16 Kiski Area (33-29) and No. 21 State College (32-27).

Bellefonte matches Altoona with ten starters with winning records, six of which are state-ranked in No. 27 Collin Harter (107), No. 10 Wyatt Long (139), No. 19 Andrew Gall (145), No. 4 Ezra Swisher (152), No. 16 Jackson Long (189) and No. 9 Luke Hockenberry (215). It also has two state-ranked wins on its resume over No. 21 Philipsburg-Osceola (21) and No. 17 Clearfield.

With those starting lineups, Altoona likely holds an advantage in the lightweights while Bellefonte holds one in the heavyweights. The middle figures to hold the best chance for excitement, especially if Swisher moves up to 160 to face Ciampoli. And another interesting toss-up stands at 107 between Harter and Picciotti.

All in all, the 2026 rendition of the District 6 Class AAA Duals has the chance to be one of the tightest in years, with all four squads holding the means to punch their tickets to states. The question is, who will stand at the top of the mountain when it's all said and done?
