Local roundup: Bellefonte, CM see success at Curwensville Girls Tournament
On Saturday, the Central Mountain and Bellefonte girls wrestling teams were in attendance at the 29-team Curwensville Girls Tournament at Curwensville High School. Both teams saw success at the event, placing two wrestlers in the top five each.
For Central Mountain, Austynn Falls (142) and Ashlyn Miller (190) claimed fourth to lead the way. Falls posted three falls – two in the first period – to make her way to championship semis, and Miller defeated Erie McDowell’s Iseal Cotto by second-period pin to do the same.
And for Bellefonte, Bailee Scott reached the third-place bout at 155, taking fourth, and sophomore Ella Johnsonbaugh joined her on the podium by taking fifth at 142. Scott posted two first-period pins to make championship semis. And after falling in championship quarters, Johnsonbaugh won three straight bouts to take third, posting two pins before defeating Pine-Richland’s Brynn Bosack by tight, 1-0 decision.
Penns Valley edged out Juniata Valley in a close contest in girls basketball to win, 50-41. The win moves Penns Valley to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the league as the Rams head to Bellefonte for a varsity-only game at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Paige Johnson scored 17 points, Elle Dinges had 10 and Lily Smith scored eight for Penn Valley.
