PIAA moves soccer state finals to Pittsburgh
The PIAA announced sites for fall sport championships for four years: 2026-27, 2027-28, 2028-29 and 2029-30. All the sites were selected and approved at the last PIAA Board of Directors meeting.
The site for football will remain at Cumberland Valley in Mechanicsburg. The biggest change is for boys and girls soccer, which will now be held at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh. The soccer championships were previously at Hersheypark Stadium before moving the last few years to Northeastern.
The other state finals are as follows: Girls volleyball will be at Saint Francis; boys and girls golf will be at the Penn State Golf Courses in State College; girls tennis will remain at the Hershey Racquet Club; cross country will be competed at Big Spring in Newville and field hockey will be at Cumberland Valley.
In addition, the PIAA changed the rules for soccer regarding overtime in the regular season. Previously, soccer games tied after 80 minutes would then have two overtime periods of 10 minutes in sudden death format. Now, there will be no overtime games prior to the postseason. All regular-season games that are tied after 80 minutes of play will be recorded as a tie.
The reasoning is for shortening game times and reducing player strain and risk of injuries.
Tournaments in the regular season can be determined.
The PIAA also will allow tennis coaches to not have to wait for the end of a set to coach and can “coach on the fly.”
Also, students who attend any vo-tech, magnet or alternative school will be allowed to participate in any athletics in their home district if said vo-tech school does not sponsor that sport.
