Bellefonte’s Fetters wins District 6 gold in 100 back
STATE COLLEGE — Bellefonte’s Sydney Fetters had an outstanding performance at the District 6 Class AA swimming championships at Penn State over the weekend and left with multiple medals.
The Red Raider junior won gold in the 100 back in 1:02.44, dropping more than three seconds off her seeded time, and secured a trip to the PIAA championships in Bucknell in March. Penns Valley’s Eleanor Gillian was right behind Fetters with a time of 1:02.89 for silver as the race had a great finish down the stretch.
Bellefonte’s Lizzy Weaver was eighth in the 100 back in 1:07.40.
In the 100 breast, Bellefonte junior Riley Hoy took bronze with a time of 1:10.81, just under three seconds below her seeded time, as Penns Valley’s Mila Klena tooks ilver (1:07.30) and Hollidaysburg’s Margaret Bandstra won gold in 1:06.06. In the race, Penns Valley’s Julia Delaney was a ninth-place finisher and Litten took fifth for Bellefonte in 1:17.23.
Fetters also swam a time of 2:26.15, dropping almost nine seconds off her time, to take home bronze in the 200 IM. The Red Raider junior was behind only Penns Valley’s Klena who won gold in 2:13.34 and Hollidaysburg’s Margaret Bandstra (2:16.39), who took silver.
Bellefonte’s Fetters, Hoy, Lizzy Weaver and Sarah Litten took third in the girls 200 medley relay with a time of 2:00.43, dropping just over two seconds.
Bellefonte’s 200 free relay team took fourth with the team of Fetters, Hoffman, Litten and Hoy swimming a 1:52.00. Penns Valley’s team of Eleanor Gillian, Caroline Coker, Charlotte Delaney and Mila Klena took silver by swimming a 1:46.74. Hollidaysburg won district gold in 1:45.96.
In the girls 400 free relay, Hoffman, Kathryn Barefoot, Juniper Ondrasik and Lizzy Weaver took eighth in 4:35.46.
Hoy took home a seventh-place finish in the 50 free in 27.78, dropping just under a second from her time. In that same event, Litten was a 12th-place finish.
The Red Raiders’ Elise Hoffman was an eighth-place finisher in the girls 200 free after swimming a 2:19.08.
On the boys side, Bellefonte’s Turner Malik was a fifth-place finisher in the 500 free in 5:24.35, dropping 13 seconds off his time in the process. Penns Valley’s Jack Wolfe won gold in 5:01.28 as he shaved off five seconds.
Bellefonte’s girls team took fifth in the team race, behind Hollidaysburg (243.5), Central Cambria (156), Penns Valley (156) and Somerset (148). Bellefonte’s boys team was 12th in the team race.
BALD EAGLE AREA
The Bald Eagle Area girls swim team finished the District 6 Class AA championships 12th in the team race while the boys counterparts took seventh.
Bald Eagle Area’s top individual finisher was Lucas Mercier. The freshman swam a time of 1:53.84 to take second in the 200 free and was behind only Westmont Hilltop’s Cullen Miller (1:47.02). The Eagles’ Connor Dixson was sixth in the 200 IM after swimming a time of 2:15.63. Mercier also took silver in the 100 free in 49.99 as he trailed only Aidan Bunrworth’s 48.61 of Conemaugh Township.
Bald Eagle Area’s Calynn Dixson was the top girls finisher for the Eagles with a time of 1:04.72 in the 100 fly, dropping almost a second off her seeded time. Penns Valley’s Charlotte Delaney won in 1:02.03.
Calynn Dixson took third in the 100 free with a sub-minute time of 59.59. Laurie Thompson Thompson was also a finished fourth in the 500 free as she swam a 5:54.40. Penns Valley’s Delaney took gold in 5:21.11. Thompson also was an 11th-place finisher in the 100 back (1:12.37).
Bald Eagle Area’s boys 200 relay team of Caleb Mercier, Elijah Mercier, Lucas Mercier and Connor Dixson took third in 1:50.28. That same foursome would swim a sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:39.83.
Elijah Mercier took fifth in the 100 back with a time of 58.31, one of five swimmers to break a minute in the event. Westmont Hilltop’s Cullen Miller won with a time of 54.15. Connor Dixson took seventh (1:01.11).
In the 100 breast, Elijah Mercier finished fourth by swimming a 1:05.23.
