Through the first 50 yards of the 100 breast, Central Mountain’s Gabriella Hosley and Bloomsburg’s Anna Yancoskie were extremely close with one another in adjacent lanes in Williamsport’s pool at the Williamsport Invitational.
But once Hosley touched the wall for the second time, she started gaining separation and got in control. Down the stretch, Hosley held a lead over Yancoskie which she never gave up. The Wildcat swam a time of 1:11.86 to claim a win in the 100 breast over Yancoskie, who took second in 1:13.20.
Hosley had an exceptional swim on Saturday. In addition to winning the 100 breast, Hosley also picked up a victory in the 100 fly and was the lone Wildcat with a first-place finish in a field with numerous standout competitors from Bloomsburg, Danville, Tunkhannock, Lewisburg, Williamsport and elsewhere.
“She’s our club swimmer and she also represents Central Mountain. She is so focused and just nothing phases her. She just goes in and grinds it out and goes for it,” Central Mountain coach Carol Matheney said. “She’s like our staple for relays and she also does really well just putting our races together and helping out the kids. She keeps everyone calmed down and focused. It works out really well. She definitely has a path to the district title, but I don’t want to say anything about that. We’ll see what happens.”
In the 100 fly, Hosley swam a time of 1:01.81 and won by just under a second against Bloomsburg’s Lucy Diehl, who finished second in 1:02.52. Yancoskie was third (1:05.00) and Selinsgrove’s Holly Grayston finished fourth in 1:06.29.

Matheney noted that the beginning of Saturday’s invitational didn’t start out as the Wildcats had hoped, but the team corrected things and started doing better after the first couple of events.
“We had a couple of melt downs at the beginning, but we talked them off the ledge and we were fine,” Matheney said with a laugh. “Everybody dropped a little bit on one or more of their events. They were in the ball park and that’s where you want to be at this time of the season because we have one more meet on Wednesday here in Williamsport. There are a couple kids who would like to qualify in some stuff, so we’ll rest them up a little bit and see how that goes and then it’ll be district time and then the tapers start. They’ll all start to get fresh as daisies and we’ll be great.”
Hosley was Central Mountain’s only girls swimmer to claim a top-5 finish. On the boys side, Christian Briggs was the only top-5 finisher as he took home a fifth-place finish in the 100 back. Rhys Swift was a seventh-place finisher in the 500 free and Che McAllister was a seventh-place finisher in the 100 breast.
“They’ve really been working hard. All three of them swam Y also so it’s really paid off for them,” Matheney said. “They’ve been able to put some really nice races together and they also tried some different events and performed at a really high level.”
Central Mountain’s boys 200 free relay team of McAllister, Jacob Rembold, Briggs and Neil Kaluzny swam a 1:40.68 for sixth.

RALPH WILSON/For The Express Central Mountain's Harper Coleman competes in the girls 200 IM during the Coaches Invitational swim meet at Williamsport on Saturday.
Jersey Shore had a pair of swimmers see success with top-6 finishes. Emily Shemory claimed a third-place finish in the 50 free and a fourth-place finish in the 100 free. Brooke Charney was a fifth-place finisher in the 100 breast and also took sixth in the 100 free.
“I felt really good this season and it’s the first time I was actually able to suit up this year (for an invitational), so I was really happy with my times and actually hit my goal and dropped time in all my individual events,” Charney said.
In the 100 breast, Charney swam a time of 1:16.26 in the fourth heat out of five. While she wasn’t in the top heat, her time was good enough for sixth. It was the same for Charney in the 100 free. Competing in the fourth of five heats, Charney swam a 59.44, the only swimmer in the heat to break a minute, which was good enough for sixth.
“For my 100 free after some of the heats got switched around, I didn’t have much competition, but I knew I had a goal time so I was able to push myself,” Charney said. “In the breaststroke, it was kind of the same scenario and I really had a goal in mind and I really wanted to get towards that, so I pushed myself really hard.”
Charney also helped the Bulldogs’ 200 free relay team alongside Sierra Derr, Shemory and Lila Nestlerode take fifth with a time of 1:51.48. Charney felt the relay team is coming along well and clicking at the right time as districts near.

RALPH WILSON/For The Express Central Mountain's Christian Briggs competes in the boys 200 medley relay during the Coaches Invitational swim meet at Williamsport on Saturday.
“We’ve actually been swimming really well together and we’ve been able to rearrange the order that we’ve had and just kind of mix things up and I think we found a really good combination,” Charney said. “We’ll be able to drop even more time and be good at districts.”
